[Bug 468303] New: kernel update puts wrong boot partition into grub menu.lst
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=468303 Summary: kernel update puts wrong boot partition into grub menu.lst Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: vankan@kabelfoon.nl QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; nl; rv:1.8.1.17) Gecko/20080921 SUSE/2.0.0.17-0.1 Firefox/2.0.0.17 Mnenhy/0.7.5.666 Since I installed 11.0 kernel updates always put root hd(0,0) into the appropriate item(s) in grub's menu.lst, despite the fact, that (hd1,0) contains the root file system and the kernel is correctly placed there. Old items are left undisturbed, but all new items are wrong. It is only a minor nuisance if you know what's happening, but to a newbie it could well be a show stopper, because the machine hangs with the message that the disk is unreadable. This looks like root of problems as in this place translating devices fail. I use mounting by id because this is a usb external disk and I have more usb storage hardware. As a consequence the disk not always gets the same /dev/sd letter across version updates of the system. For the moment I will change the root file entry in fstab back to sdb1 and see if menu.lst is updated correctly in the next kernel update. I'll keep you posted. I think it is strange that the root file partition cannot be determined, because the kernel update takes place on a running system and a simple parse of the output of "df" could tell you that. Also a parse of the current menu.lst could tell you on what partition the current root file system resides. But maybe I'm way off base here. :-) Regards and thanks for your efforts. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is it possible to have a line like (hd1) /dev/disk/by-id/APPROPRIATE_DISK_ID in device.map in 11.0? That would cure the problem once and for all. Second is that during kernel update command output in comment #7 doesn't appear (doesn't find anything). Now is device map write almost everytime with udev devices. So it is fixed. But I don't know why call to udevinfo (in 11.1 is used udevadm info) fail, so I cannot help you, if you don't have any idea -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
