I deleted the quickcam ko from the /lib/modules tree, to play save. I checked with lsmod | less to see, that only the two gspca modules are accessing the cam. It is all with the kotd as on .../HEAD/... on 18.08.2009, 20:00 Lets see, what can be done upstream.

From digging in to the code it looks like qgcam only supports v4l1. gspca is a v4l2 driver so that is why v4l1compat is required- it emulates v4l1 on top of v4l2 devices.
