[Bug 277221] New: ppc DVD will not boot
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=277221 Summary: ppc DVD will not boot Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: PowerPC OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: boblounsbury@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Purpose: Install openSUSE 10.2 on an iBook G3 using a DVD. Problem: DVD won't boot. I have yaboot installed so when the yaboot splash comes up I press the 'c' button to boot to cd/dvd but it doesn't do anything. Actually it acts as if it will boot but then returns to the main yaboot screen where I press 'c' again and then the computer just hangs saying something like 'booting to cd'. I left it on that screen for over 5 minutes and still nothing happened. Methodology: After the first DVD failed to boot, I downloaded another file and ran the md5sum. It matched so I burned the .iso to DVD using Nero. Once again the DVD failed to boot. I then burned the .iso to DVD using a different program and once again the DVD failed. At this point I would have to say that it is not a problem with my computer or my DVD's but with the openSUSE .iso file for ppc. I tried the iso on the main openSUSE page and also iso's from two or three mirrors. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=277221 ------- Comment #2 from boblounsbury@gmail.com 2007-05-23 10:31 MST ------- The last option 'boot cd:,\suseboot\yaboot' worked. Thanks. However, I still don't understand why the .iso is not automatically booting. I've successfully used selfburned media to boot Fedora, Ubuntu, Yellow-Dog, Debian, and Gentoo on this computer. So why isn't the opensuse DVD booting properly? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=277221 ------- Comment #5 from olh@novell.com 2007-06-13 13:07 MST ------- PowerBook4,1 I have the same model. DVD does not boot, but simple because the hfs part has IO errors. Does boot cd:,\suseboot\yaboot read all files right away, or do you hear lots of retries from the drive? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It booted right away from firmware. I heard lots of retries from the drive when I just tried to boot from DVD but then it just froze. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=277221 ------- Comment #10 from boblounsbury@gmail.com 2007-06-13 15:09 MST ------- Don't know and unfortunately at this point in the game I don't care (I know that's horrible to say). I installed and tried out opensuse for awhile but it was too resource hungry for my old 600MHz iBook (for instance to open mozilla took 30s or more in opensuse while only 10s or less in Debian). I have since installed and am currently running Debian Etch and don't have any plans to change since it installed and is running perfectly. Mostly meaning that I really don't want to download, burn, and try to boot an opensuse CD1. Sorry. Like I said before I've never had any trouble booting any other distro so I hope you can figure it out. If you really, really, really need me to burn and try to boot a CD1, I'll do it, if there is no other way to troubleshoot the cause. I appreciate the response that has gone into this issue and if I can help with something else let me know. Thanks, Bob -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
