[Bug 305080] New: lots of conflicts with KDE packages while update
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=305080 Summary: lots of conflicts with KDE packages while update Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: suse-beta@cboltz.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- system to upgrade: 10.2 with latest KDE packages from buildservice target: 10.3 beta2 architecture: i586 I had the latest KDE packages from Buildservice on 10.2, and the beta2 installation had to downgrade them (regarding version number). This resulted in lots of conflicts, YaST even marked the beta2 KDE packages with "arch change" and did not honor what I chose in the conflict dialog. So the bugs here are: - the conflict dialog did not honor my choice. It always showed the same conflicts over and over, even after I had chosen what to do. - the conflict dialog mentions an arch change, while there is none I had to go to the packages mask and mark the KDE packages to be refreshed. conflicts.txt is attached to this bugreport. y2logs + testcase: http://www.cboltz.de/tmp/y2logs-103b2-kde-testcase.tgz - too large for bugzilla -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well, I guess we are in fact providing newer packages or packages with different requires in the Build Service. An upgrade like this doesn't sound like a suppored setup to me.
I know KDE packages from buildservice aren't officially supported. I also understand that they can cause some problems on upgrade, and I wouldn't complain if there were "just" some conflicts. However, please see the "the bugs here are" section in the initial comment again. For me it looks like the solver can't really handle downgrades... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you use it and you can't boot anymore afterwards or it accidentally wipes your hard disk, then this is "oh sorry, but your bad luck trying it". b) distribution update not being possible due to additional buildservice repositories being installed. I think this should work. I know the redcarpet solver cannot handle b) at all very well. there might be a hack possible for a distribution upgrade though (like e.g. preferring packages which were rebuild against the new distribution). if the release numbers of kdelibs3 from factory are lower than the release number of kdelibs3 in the buildservice for 10.2, then this is not our bug, as we can't influence the release numbers at all. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

distro upgrade might work if it prefers packages from the "right distribution" even if release numbers say different.
Indeed, this would be the best solution. I would have chosen this if the conflicts dialog would accept my choice :-/
another possibility might be that the build service becomes more clever in selecting the release number (with an additional hint in the buildservice project).
This won't solve the problem because there are other package sources outside of the buildservice. (Yes, I know they are also unsupported.) And there might even be problems when using official packages - for example, I have kept agrep-4.0 from SUSE 8.2 (it was dropped after 8.2). Now it re-appared in the distribution with version number agrep-0.7... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
