[Bug 468857] New: When running 11.1 as guest in a vmware host with 11.0, keyboard looses all special keys
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=468857 Summary: When running 11.1 as guest in a vmware host with 11.0, keyboard looses all special keys Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: robin.listas@telefonica.net QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121300 SUSE/3.0.5-0.1 Firefox/3.0.5 Host: OpenSUSE 11.0 Guest: OpenSUSE 11.1 (retail) vmware: VMware-server-1.0.8-126538 Symptoms: vmware console in windowed mode, or quick switch. I go from one to the other normally, using the default key combination (alt-ctrl). Suddenly, keys like Shift, Alt, Ctrl, stop working in the HOST, while they remain working in the guest. Only known method to restore is log-out of the gnome session, via mouse. This only happens with the linux VM, not windows or dos (as guests). Thus it has to be a linux issue. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Happens randomly, but it ends by happening. I have had to stop using the guest 11.1, which was an attempt to debug other bugzillas I have pending. Actual Results: Just use vmware as described above. Expected Results: Failure as described above. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could you attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log after this issue has occured. Could you run xev to figure out what's the output when you press the affected keys?
The keypresses can be seen in xev (search for Caps_Lock in attached file and below), they must be intercepted later. And I do not see errors in the Xorg log. I managed to restore usability by issuing command "setxkbmap" without parameters - it did not work immediately, but suddenly I noticed the keyboard was working. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For resetting keyboard. Maybe switching to linux console and back helps here. setxkbmap is also an idea.
Except that ctrl-alt-f1 does not switch :-} Well, it seems I have more or less have it under control, thanks.
Never heard that resolution changes from WONTFIX to FIXED unintentionally - also not with the updated bugzilla, which had a lot of bugs with the status changes. I would only report it if you can reproduce it again.
Right. Must have been me, then, with my funky keyboard, during one of my attempts. I'll be on my guard next time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Wow! Thanks! You just solved my other problem, switching to text mode inside the guest ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
