When I log out as root a white screen appears. Moving the mouse shows different cursor icons depending of what the mouse sees. I have to press the power button of my pc for a while to shut off by brute force and switch on the pc for reboot. Today (after the metacity patch from yesterday) it didn't happen again, but there was another strange effect: I logged in as user and wanted to login as root as well: only the background screen and system mouse cursor appeared. With ctrl-alt-backward I came back to my user account. When I logged out as user and tried to login as root again only background screen and system mouse appeared. With ctrl-alt-backward my user login showed astonishingly user backgroud and mouse. After reboot I could establish user and root login. Maybe a config file had to be [re]written.
