[Bug 470456] New: hald started to suck up all available memory
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=470456 Summary: hald started to suck up all available memory Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Hotplug AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jnelson-suse@jamponi.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=268501) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=268501) screenshot1 User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121300 SUSE/3.0.5-1.1 Firefox/3.0.5 I came back from a short absence to find my reasonable machine very sluggish. A quick trip to 'top' showed the cause and culprit - memory pressure induced by hald, which was at that point consuming some 1.4G of memory. Further investigation by our friends 'ps' and 'grep' showed many many many hal-related processes littering the process table. A call to 'killall -9' seemed to resolve the latter, while an 'rchal restart' served the former quite well. However, this should not have happened. Attached please find 2 (two) screenshots. Additionally, I shall paste below some lines from /var/log/messages: Jan 28 18:39:45 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:45 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:45 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Jan 28 18:39:46 worklaptop hald[2692]: forcibly attempting to lazy unmount /dev/sdb as enclosing drive was disconnected Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What Kind of device was it? Is it reproduceable? If so please follow http://en.opensuse.org/HAL#HAL_crashes_or_hangs and attacht the listed logs. I'm not sure if it is reproduceable as yet. Why would it need to be? There is clearly a logic bug somewhere - no matter what I plug in or unplug it should never do that. Under no circumstances should the software be attempting to do the same thing, failing, and repeating in an infinite loop while consuming memory and log space. When it failed to do so (too many files), it would close the right files but the loop was still infinite. killall hal-storage-unmount would only kill the ones present and within a second or two the process table would fill again. stracing hald-runner clearly showed this. Attaching lshal* files short.

Are you really sure that is insufficient? I see a pretty clear pattern there myself... There are 77257 lines in the file I could send you.
