[Bug 333675] New: yast online update fails NFS access after kernel update
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=333675 Summary: yast online update fails NFS access after kernel update Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: tabt@tabt.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- I just installed a system using PXE and NFS. During online update a kernel update was installed. Later during the update yast wanted to access the NFS installation source to get some packages and failed to do so. Trying to mount that NFS share on a shell failed, too, with error: mount.nfs: No such device Installing the new kernel removed the modules for the running kernel and it seems the NFS mount would have needed to insert a kernel module. Solution? - try to access (non-CD) repositories once before actually doing any updates? - delay removing old kernel modules to after next reboot? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did this happen during the installation (i.e. you were running the online update during the installation)? Can you please attach yast2 logs? I am quite certain that it was after installation as I remember that the shell was an xterm launched on the desktop. Providing log files would be difficult as I am not sure any more which of my 10+ installations of 10.3 exactly showed that problem. Probably it would be easiest to recreate the problem by doing a fresh install without online sources and try it again. But I am not sure if the sequence of package installs would be deterministic enough to produce the error again given that the amount of update packages changed since then and I am not sure which setup of installed packages caused the dependency on the NFS installation media to fulfil new dependencies. Hmmm, maybe one could simply add e.g. kernel development schema during the online update or something else that has not been installed yet. But the main cause that the modules for the running kernel were gone at that time when YaST needed them to be able to access the NFS source is a valid point anyway. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I am not sure whether I get the scenario together again. As far as I can remember it was either that some update had an extra requirement to a packet from the (loop-back mounted and accessed via NFS) DVD or that I selected extra packages manually. Something like "If I am already in the awfully slow package manager let's install some extra stuff" might be the culprit. But on the other hand, that too should be handled gracefully, wouldn't you agree? And to clarify: no, it was not an extra run of the package manager after a kernel update, but that the kernel update was installed and afterwards during the same run the NFS module for the currently running kernel was missing for some other installation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If you update your kernel just updating packages, and then install from NFS sources, there is not much the application can do. May be we can also honor the reboot_suggested in packages, but that would be too much for a geek usecase. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
