[Bug 276426] New: bootstrap installation fails
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276426 Summary: bootstrap installation fails Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: daved@windclimber.id.au QAContact: jsrain@novell.com During installation from openSuSE 10.3 alpha 4 CD 1, an error occurs. The log offered by Yast2 says: === System Checking === Checking for /usr/bin/chroot...Passed Checking for chroot directory /mnt...Passed Trying to chroot...Failed It then reports "An error occurred during initrd creation" "Error occured while installing GRUB" Looking at the system using virtual console 2, /dev/sda7, the partition selected for the test installation, was mounted on /mnt and contained the usual directories. /mnt/boot was completely empty. Exactly the same scenario occurred on two quite different x86 machines: a fairly conventional pentium, and a ThinkPad laptop. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Before starting investigation: is this reproducible with Alpha6? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I suspect that part of the problem was that the disk partition names were extremely long device id numbers which yast may not have been recognising. I was recently able to install alpha5 on the same machine without difficulty. The machine is in another city, and I am not sure when I will be able to try alpha 6. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=276426#c6 Stefan Fent <stefan.fent@novell.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |FIXED --- Comment #6 from Stefan Fent <stefan.fent@novell.com> 2007-08-01 03:06:43 MST --- I think having it verified with Alpha5 is ok, as I wasn't able to reproduce with Alpha6. And the persistent device name links should not be a problem, we're using them since quite a while. So, I'll close this bug fixed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
