https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=768564 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=768564#c0 Summary: Network Manager does not connect to wireless automatically during startup Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: michalng@gmail.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=496122) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=496122) Screenshot for above mentioned process. User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:13.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/13.0.1 Installed openSUSE 12.2 Beta 2 and setup wireless connection. Next day upon bootup, noticed that the wireless connection is not connected. Upon investigation, noticed that the following steps is needed to bring up the connection: 1. Startup opensuse (wireless not connected) 2. Uncheck "Enable wireless" to DISABLE the wireless connection 3. Check "Enable wireless" to re_enable the wireless connection 4. Network Manager connects to wireless automatically During the next reboot, repeat the above to get wireless connection. Network Manager should connect to wireless automatically during startup/bootup. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Startup opensuse (wireless not connected) 2. Uncheck "Enable wireless" to DISABLE the wireless connection 3. Check "Enable wireless" to re_enable the wireless connection 4. Network Manager connects to wireless automatically Actual Results: Wireless not connected automatically Expected Results: Wireless connected automatically -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I think part of this is in networkmanager itself, in 12.1 I usually see all available networks except my own, which should be strongest because I sit next to it. The method above to disable and re-enable works there also. In 12.1 it usually connects automatically after a while, maybe 20 seconds, but in 12.2 it doesn't do that, I need to go through the disable - enable thing. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After restart I cannot found my network on the networkmanager list. I found 4 workarounds: 1) (tested, working) mark a network as "System connection" (I use this one) 2) (tested, working) enter network name in connect to hidden network field and fill one time more all settings 3) (not tested) disable and enable WiFi by hardware switch or networkmanager switch 4) (not tested) Delete network settings and restart computer. Tentatively solution that I had found working: - open networkmanager - select the "System Connection" found below the "Connect Automatically" - you are then required to input the root password Wireless connection will be connected after reboot. Me too (iwlwifi) with opensuse 12.2 x86_64 KDE 4.9.1. Important Information, with ifup, the automatic connexion works. The problem is only with Network Manager. But the wifi network connection management with yast is less convenient. Search for available networks and classify according to their power is much less easy than in NM taskbar! Here are my investigations: - At each restart my PC, Network Manager (with the iwlwifi driver) does not detect my router. However, I see those of my neighbors is evidence that the wifi is active (though they are far away and there are walls to cross!). I just switch off the wifi (with switch on my PC) then I switch on and my router appears with those of my neighbors, and the connection is done automatically as I configured. Once connected, everything works nickel (bandwidth, range). - If I delete the configuration of my router in NM and I reboot, it appears this time in NM but I have to retype my wpa password. - So rather than delete the configuration of my router, I uncheck "connect automatically", there is better because I can just click on my router in NM (which appears in the list) in order to connect. I feel, but that's just a hunch, there is a problem of delay in loading NM and its configuration files. A bit like NM try to connect to my router while the wifi chipset has not scanned for available networks. I've used Kubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva and Opensuse (KDE x86_64) in the past and this is the first time my wifi problem with this PC. Weird bug because you can not say that my wifi is so exotic !!! P.S : Postscript: excuse my poor English! ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Since I travel a lot I connect a lot in hotels etc. Most of the time I have a standard NM connection, NOT system connection, and auto connect enabled. At home, while almost next to my router, it needs the switch off - switch on routine, in some hotels it connects automatically. At this very moment I am writing this from a hotel room with only wired connections and after boot I need to disable network in NM altogether and switch it on again to get my wired network to see the different wired profiles I have. So it does not seem to have to do with signal strength, and the wireless protection, i.e. wpa etc does also not affect this. Have not found a pattern in it as to why one connects automatically and the other not. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=768564 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=768564#c22 --- Comment #22 from Gary Ching-Pang Lin <glin@suse.com> 2012-09-12 09:56:38 UTC --- I sorted out some clues. By design, NetworkManager finds the best autoconnect connection when a device is activated. It works fine for the system connections. However, for the private connections, NM has to request passwords from the secret agent which stores passwords in gnome-keyring or kwallet. In gnome3, gnome-shell provides the secret agent. For some reason, the secret agent in kde was started late, so NM failed to get the passwords and wpa_supplicant put it into the blacklist due to connection failure. A temporary workaround is to mark the connection as non-autoconnect, or switching the WIFI device on and off to clear the blacklist. For the connection missing after logout gnome, I believe it's another story and am investigating it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
