[Bug 460220] New: Installing 11.1 renders machine unbootable.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=460220 Summary: Installing 11.1 renders machine unbootable. Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bwhiteley@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Development I installed 11.1 (i686 gnome livecd). After rebooting, as requested, my laptop reports "No operating system found". I didn't have this problem with the betas or rc1. For Boot Loader Location, I selected "Boot from Root Partition," as I always do. I have another instance of Grub installed in the MBR, with my own menu.lst that I manage manually (it just has a bunch of chainloader directives to my various '/' partitions). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After mounting /proc and /dev, I repaired the MBR. I tried doing this with yast bootloader, but it just seemed to hang. (couldn't even killall -9 y2base). So, I repaired it from the grub> shell. I mention this because this activity likely left some artifacts in the logs from comment #1, which otherwise may have caused some confusion. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There was problem that if "/" was on logical partition yast2-bootloader skips analyse of MBR. It was fixed and yast2-bootloader always analyse content of MBR. -> It means proposal try to propose settings which will be able boot the system. Please look at supported scenarion: http://en.opensuse.org/Bootloader/Scenarios and also look at analyse MBR and proposal: http://en.opensuse.org/YaST/Bootloader_MBR If you try it next time please also deselect checkbox "Write Generic Boot Code to MBR" - you can find it: tab "Boot Loader Instalation" -> button "Boot Loader Options" It is cause why your changes was not enought and your system is unbootable. Have a nice day... bug is invalid. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
