[Bug 438567] New: GNOME LiveCD Looking for "configuration server"
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=438567 Summary: GNOME LiveCD Looking for "configuration server" Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta 3 Platform: i386 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jimomura@pathcom.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Beta-Customer
From the beginning:
I downloaded the i386 GNOME LiveCD Beta 3 ISO and confirmed the md5sum of the file on my HD. I burned a CD-RW using Nero 8 on my Windows box and it verified the disc was a good burn. Installation attempt on Acer Aspire One using Philips DVD USB drive, attempting to create multiboot system using free HD space. When I ran it, I re-verified it using the LiveCD function and it failed. It reported an error at sector 354752. That sounds ok to me since it should be at the end of the image. "md5sum" from the check was "9b8372c9bdc6cb35fa26a0908b3f64". Running the LiveCD session works, with some issues. For example, the "System Monitor" loads too high. Only the bottom of the window is on the screen. Pulling it down stretches the window so that the bottom 2 graphs can be seen, but there is no way to bring the top of the window down, or close it. An attempt to change resolution to 800 x 600 to see if I could fix the above problem resulted in a crash. Installation Not Working: I rebooted again and tried to install the system. On my first attempt I did not have my Internet wired up. It failed with: "An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for GNOME SuperUser. Some of your settings may not work properly" "Failed to contact configuration server . . . " I rebooted again with a wired network connection. The same thing happened. "Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply . . " I checked the connection using FireFox and it was fine. NOTE: I would prefer to not have to have the Internet connected at all during installations. This how I have usually done installations in the past -- I install and then upgrade later. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I will read them later. In the meanwhile, if anyone wants anything from this, I can run it again later today. If I cannot load Beta 3 in the next few days, I am thinking about re-assigning the computer for now, so if you think of anything that might help you, ask as soon as possible. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Your report will likely only be look at after the weekend, so it might end up lasting more than a few days. Especially for point 3, it sounds like it might be useful if you still had the system around. By the way, a listing of your issues for the benefit of the assignee and so we can reference them by number: 1. LiveCD integrity check failed; error at sector 354752 (Installation) 2. System Monitor too big (Gnome) 3. Resolution change crash (Gnome?) 4. dbus/gnomesu error (Gnome, bug 428963) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The rest of the report is background information included for the sake of completeness. I have opened a new Bug #440446 regarding the problem launching GNOME System Monitor (point #2). That much can be ignored, unless it contributes to this bug. If I have time, I will open a bug for point #1. I do not expect to get around to opening a bug for point #3. If this bug turns out to be, as you say, a duplicate of #428963, then maybe we can rename this bug and just treat it as a report of point 3 later. I will not be re-assigning the Acer Aspire One before the next Beta release of 11.1, so I am still open to re-running Beta 3 for further information. However, when the next release (Beta 4) comes out, I will probably retire this computer for now. I am getting too busy to continue testing on this computer. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The iso md5sum checked. I burned it and ran it, and the md5sum checked again properly. I notice that the check showed "0 pad" before the checksum. I think this was the problem on the Nero 8 burn on the Beta 3 disc, so I think this has been resolved. If I get a chance to re-burn the iso using Nero, I will try it, but that might not happen. The Installer got further this time, but crashed (probably after the "Welcome" stage ended and going into whatever is next). It left "y2base" and "yast2" processes, which were killable. I have looked through the current posted bugs and this does not seem to be reported yet. Later, I will probably open a new bug for it and close this one (to avoid clutter). I have not tried changing resolution yet. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have not made a bug report for the crashing during changing resolution yet, and I might not get around to it at all. Aside from the above, I have found that "OpenOffice Writer" fails with: "Fatal Error. The application cannot be started." Also, the "Firefox" window is does not have gadgets (the sizing bars, Maximize button, Minimize button, Close button, etc.). Scroll bars are provided properly as needed. These might already be reported. I have not checked yet. This should be the last message added to this report. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
