[Bug 423663] New: adding partition with partitioner is very complicated
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=423663 Summary: adding partition with partitioner is very complicated Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Alpha 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: pnemec@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: mschmidkunz@novell.com Found By: --- New partitioner have very complex and confusing gui. Adding partition is much more complicated than it was in previous version. What you need to do to add partition to disk sda? 1) click on certain device 2) select "Partition" 3) select "add" 4) click Next 5) click Next 6) click Finish. In previous version you just click add+finish. All information were in one dialog. Now they are split across 4 dialogs.... (Wow, that was the quickest bug resolve I`ve ever made :-)) Seriously: The main reason for splitting the dialog into 4 steps are * to reduce the amount of information presented to the user * to be in accordance with the mental model of a user (first select type, then size,...) * consistency with the add-wizards of e.g. Add RAID, Add VG (also have single steps) * reuse of wizard elements in other add wizards (mount & file system dialog can be reused in edit, add vg, add RAID) I hope this answers your concerns :-) Cu, Martin -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Obviously. I understand all your points. But: 1) You are not reducing anything. All those information has to be presented to user anyway. You are just doing it more painfull spliting it to 4 dialogs. 2) Can be done by position on dialogue. By the way, those informations looks really really lonely. One piece of information on big 1024*768 (minimum for Graphical YaST installation) screen. 4) I do not have RAID, so I can`t comment here. 5) Can`t oppose here, actually reusing is good things. If it make sense. Do you have any feedback on partitioner? I understand that it can be just me, who do not like clicking, just to fill one information. OK, here are some additional thoughts to that: 1) it is not about reducing the overall amount of information only the amount per screen which is presented to the user. Users who are no experts in partitioning get confused when presented a lot of information. 2) True for big resolutions but what about 80x25 lines? The feedback was very positive so far. In fact, you were the first to complain about the four steps by now :-) I am very curious, what other reviews of 11.1 will bring :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This partitioner is overly complicated. I personally found the old partitioner very intuitive, but I can see how some people were unimpressed by it. The new partitioner basically takes the previous and completely unchanged one screen partitioner, hides it away under the hard disk overview then adds on a bunch of extra fluff for individual partitions. Everything in this new partitioner is duplicated because the old partitioner is still there in all its gnarly old glory. Everything except adding a new partition and seeing how much space is being used in one glance. For that, you need to find the screen containing the old partitioner. Then, when you're there, you realize that you can really do everything from this one screen. Partitioning the partitioner is necessary to reduce clutter, yes. However, the project should be moving in the direction of graphically depicting the hard disk, not showing a ton of extraneous info in text. If acronis, parted, etc are able to get partitioning right, opensuse should be taking a page from their books, rather than from fdisk. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I also feel that the new partitioner is a net loss in usability. For example, after entering the Expert Partitioner view, the topmost (unlabeled) node of the System view tree is selected, thus showing all partitions under the Available Storage on area. Which is fine. What isn't find is that the only buttons shown are Help, Abort, Back, and Accept. There are no context menus in the Available Storage on section. So how do I add a partition? Or remove one? Or setup LVM? Or any of a dozen other things I'd like to do? It is Not Obvious, whereas I was able to figure out the previous one in (comparatively) only a few seconds. Eventually I found that I could expand the hard Disks tree, and selecting /dev/sda would allow me to remove and create partitions (yay!). But setting up LVM? On 11.0, I could create a partition, and explicitly set the File system ID to 0x8E Linux LVM. In 11.1 Beta 2, I can set the File system ID, but it isn't preserved! It gets automatically changed to 0x83 Linux (for primary partitions) or 0x0F Extended (for extended partitions), and changing the value from the Edit... dialog has NO effect! It is, in short, very annoying and hostile. It manages to turn a straightfoward (if necessarily complicated) process into a nightmarishly complicated process, as I have to jump between multiple different tree nodes in order to accomplish what used to be on one screen. So NOW, to setup LVM, I have to create a 0x83 Linux partition first, then go to the Volume Management tree, Add Volume Group, etc., *Then* go to the Volume Group -> XXX node in order to add logical volumes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Sorry, I don't see your point here: in the old partitioner you needed to create a 0x83 partition first as well. When you click on LVM a pop up appears telling you that a 0x83 partition is required and that you have to click on create.

In all other points, I notice your point. Please note that making things usable does not mean, that everybody will enjoy it more. Making things usable can be only be achieved for one target group. As YaST is used by many different target groups it might very well occur that by redesigning things one target group might benefit and the other one might feel that it lost a great deal of usability. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Comment #8 implies that this bug was fixed. It is not fixed in Beta 3, and in fact it is worse now. If I try to create a new Primary partition, select "Do not format partition", sepcify a File system ID of "0x8E Linux LVM", and "Do not mount partition," I now get a YaST2 dialog saying: Error It is not allowed to assign a mount point to a device with nonexistent or unknown file system. So now it's not a matter of the filesystem ID (not) being preserved, now I can't do it AT ALL.
