Really early btrfs might've been doing strange things with BIOs. Since openSUSE 11.3 is out of maintenance (and that vintage btrfs is scary in itself), I'm going to close this one as WONTFIX. I expect you don't have the array around anymore if you could never write anything to it. If you're able to reproduce this on 11.4 or, preferably due to btrfs getting much better recently, 12.1, please re-open with an updated Product field.
