[Bug 871288] New: No sound in 13.2 milestone 0 KDE 32-bit on X41
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=871288 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=871288#c0 Summary: No sound in 13.2 milestone 0 KDE 32-bit on X41 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 13.2 Milestone 0 Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 13.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound AssignedTo: tiwai@suse.com ReportedBy: hrm_sfo@sonic.net QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=584433) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=584433) YaST2 logs from configuring sound, plus boot.log User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:27.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/27.0 I installed openSUSE 13.2 milestone 0 KDE 32-bit, DVD iso burned to a USB stick. Formatted /, reused /home from 13.1. So far, I cannot get sound working correctly. This test system is an IBM ThinkPad X41. Multimedia works well on this system with openSUSE 13.1 running from a different partition. Integrated sound is identified as: 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller Configured as sound card number 0 Driver snd-intel8x0 The sound card was not configured automatically during installation. I did that manually. While in the YaST Sound Configuration module, right after configuring the card, the test sound is audible. If I exit the YaST Sound Configuration module then start it again, test sound is not heard. KDE Mixer shows "No playback devices". In the KDE Audio and Video Settings, Audio Hardware Setup shows no sound card or sound device. In pavu "Input Devices" tab, Built-in Analog Audio Stereo is shown, and the input meter responds to sound at the microphone. Yet "Output Devices" tab shows only Dummy Output. I tried playing test sounds, mp3 and midi files, and streaming audio. Nothing is heard. I set up multimedia using the same procedure as 13.1, but with Factory repositories. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install openSUSE 13.2 milestone 0 KDE, 32-bit 2.Test sound 3. Actual Results: No sound Expected Results: hear sound I added boot.log to this archive. I deleted /var/log/YaST2/y2log, then saved the attachment after doing: Start YaST2 Sound click Other, Play Test Sound (no sound) Delete configured card Click edit Normal setup Next Sound Card Volume Test works Next Sound configuration window Other Play Test Sound - works OK Saving sound card settings... Back to Control Center Click Sound Other Play Test Sound - does not work -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The environment variable $ALSA_CONFIG_PATH was not set.
This is odd. After running setup-pulseaudio --enable and re-login, it should have been set via /etc/profile.d/*. If not, something wrong in a deeper level.
So then I disabled autospawn in /etc/pulse/client.conf (set autosspawn=no), killed pulseaudio (here, process 1399), restarted it manually with -v option as follows:

So, it's still alive. Was it started by someone else? You may try a lighter system instead of KDE for testing PA. You can start another WM like twm and test PA there. Wait, wait. $ALSA_CONFIG_PATH must have been set without any extra setup by user after running setup-pulseaudio --enable. If it's not, something is broken in a deeper level, as I already mentioned. So, revert your change in /etc/envionment, make sure that you running setup-pulseaudio check whether $ALSA_CONFIG_PATH setup appears in /etc/profile.d/*, re-login and check whether it appears in your environment. Also, you can check other variables set in /etc/profile.d/* whether they are applied.(e.g. I have $PYTHONSTARTUP). If no such variables are seen in your environment, the likely culprit is KDE (kdm or whatever starting the session). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
