Please explain why it should work? It cannot.
It might not be your problem, Thorsten, but it's something we should fix.
We can only fix this, if NetworkManager gets an copy of /etc/init.d/ and starts all applications depending on network in the correct order and shutdown, before the network is shut down, in the correct order. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm not sure how I've shown that I don't care, but NM faithfully has been updating yp configuration from DHCP for a long time.
Yes, but ypbind is started before NM enables the network.
How is NM incompatible with unix protocols?
Using NM, the domainname (not the DNS one) can be changed with every activation of the network. Traditional UNIX protocols only allow to set the domainname once during booting before this applications are started, and it is not allowed to change the name later. This requirements are not fullfillable with the NetworkManager design.
What does it matter how an interface is activated, through a shell script or from a daemon?
It does not matter how the interface is activated, but when it is. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes, but ypbind is started before NM enables the network.
See initial description: bramble-vioclient2:~ # rcypbind start This is called _after_ the network is set up properly, aka NetworkManager has a active connection. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It would be very easy to just drop NIS information from DHCP. If NIS requires one active network connection that is established at boot time and never disappears, then I have to agree - there's not much point in having NM - the assumption is already made that network is already present and can not disappear. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
