Also, I'm happy to just blow away everything under /var/log/journal/ if that will likely fix the problem. Is there any reason that I shouldn't try that?
You could do that indeed, not sure if it will fit the attachment size limit though. Or maybe you can just upload them somewhere and paste the link here. Also it might be interesting to attach the coredump of systemctl as well. You can do so by inspecting the output of "coredumpctl" which will list the saved coredumps. If you can find the relevant one, use "coredumpctl dump xxx" to extract the coredump. That said I'm really not sure to find what went wrong, you'll be warned ;) You might want to open a bug against upstream if you need a quicker resolution.
