Application names in Kickoff become blank if you make it "Show applications by name". Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Right click Application Launcher/Kickoff in the panel and choose "Application Launcher Settings" 2. Check "Show applications by name" 3. Does this resolve the issue ? This might seem to be a strange request, but I am using the vanilla kickoff menu (with only the options Switch tab on hover and Show applications by name). Some things I found out in the meantime: - If "Show applications by name" is turned off, this bug is also present. In this case the application name is not shown when you hover over the affected entries. - If I edit the .desktop file (/usr/share/applications/kde4/systemsettings.desktop in this case) and change the "Name" or "GenericName" field to something different (for the respective language, or english if there is no translated entry), it displays fine. In this case only one of them is displayed (even on mouse hover). My first finding in comment #10 is no bug but intended behaviour, therefore changing summary back. (sorry) But it seems in that case the patch causes the wrong field to be hidden if "Show applications by name" is turned on... I didn't notice any unwanted side effects until now so I created submit requests against KDE:Distro:Factory (sr#149677) and KDE:Release:49 (sr#149678). I have also created packages for standard openSUSE 12.1 and 12.2 if someone wants to try them (only kdebase4-workspace is needed).
