[Bug 246934] New: Yast YOU grabs focus when minimized.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246934 Summary: Yast YOU grabs focus when minimized. Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: PC OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: robin.listas@telefonica.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Situation (gnome, suse 10.2): I fire up Yast, then YOU, then I minimize both so that I can continue working somewhere else (instead of waiting for a minute or two while YOU prepares). Suddenly, YOU pops up, before finishing loading catalogs. I minimize it, and a few seconds later it pops up agin. I minimize, and again it pops up, three or four times. Can't YOU be told to behave and repect the minimized status? I'm told that sending you to another workspace doesn't help, it grabs focus. Other apps do this as well, like OOo, but YOU in openSUSE 10.1 was well behaved in this respect. I consider a main window grabbing focus when the user has another app in focus is bad manners, and can cause damaging errors, as Yast/YOU runs as root and can get keypresses that were intented to the other app the user was working at. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If the main dialog is iconified, both the main dialog and the popup dialog on top of it are iconified. Later dialogs, however, will not honor the "iconified" state and open regardless. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Correction: if Yast/you is started in another workspace (gnome), it does unminimze, but it doesn't grab focus across workspaces. That's a sufficient workaround for me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=246934 sh@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Severity|Normal |Major ------- Comment #5 from sh@novell.com 2007-02-22 03:34 MST ------- Grabbing the keyboard focus is just a byproduct of the original misbehaviour: Follow-up windows pop up even though the main window is minimized. This should not happen. As for the focus, this is something that window managers tend to handle very differently: Many WMs will move the focus to a new window as it pops up. Some WMs (e.g. KDE's kwin) let the user configure this so the focus is not torn off a window the user is currently typing in. But of course the original problem needs to be fixed: Once mimimized, an application should remain minimized until the user explicitly expands it again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

From https://bugzilla.novell.com/page.cgi?id=fields.html#bug_severity :
Blocker Blocks development and/or testing work Critical Crash, loss of data, corruption of data, severe memory leak Major Major loss of function It does not block the development of this product. Thus it is not a blocker. It does not crash. It does not lose data. It does not corrupt data. There is no memory leak (much less a severe one). Thus it is not critical. There is a loss of function (you cannot properly do any other work while it is installing packages), and I fully agree that it is a major loss of function. Thus it is a major bug. Thank you for your cooperation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From 332751: It would be more user friendly to have these messages appear in a fixed region in yasts (e.g. a status bar at the bottom of yast2). Or perhaps in a special reserved area of the yast window.
This would prevent many small windows to pop up "randomly" during the download and compilation of the packages cache. This is only valid during normal desktop work, but also during the installation of openSUSE-10.3. A fixed status bar at the bottom of the screen would be much nicer than all those jumping around windows. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Minimizing doesn't fix it. Moving the window to another screen doesn't fix it.
Sugerence: Start a second graphical session; for instance, from one of the text consoles (ctrl-alt-f1..f6), type: startx kde -- :1 A second session will start up in ctrl-alt-f8. Start up Yast/You there, then go back to your normal session with ctrl-alt-f7. You will not be interrupted now. (perhaps kde is an overkill; xfce would be fine, I guess) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
