[Bug 262330] New: metaSendsEscape conflicts with Alt translations
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262330 Summary: metaSendsEscape conflicts with Alt translations Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 Applications AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: schwab@novell.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com The default key translations in app-defaults/XTerm (*VT100.Translations) conflict with metaSendsEscape. When it is enabled you get two escape characters when typing Alt with letter. Even without metaSendsEscape the Alt translations do the wrong thing: Alt-Ctrl generates an escape when Alt is pressed first. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262330 ------- Comment #7 from werner@novell.com 2007-05-14 03:10 MST ------- The ESC simply provides the ALT within emacs command line mode of bash and tcsh. Compare this with /etc/inputrc and /etc/profile.d/bindkey.tcsh .. if you change this you have to provide for all new sequences the correpsonding binding in /etc/inputrc and /etc/profile.d/bindkey.tcsh has to be expanded. As long as ncurses terminfo does not provide the key bindings for the comamndline mode which is definitly not the same as in application mode, the only way to get a correct, non-beeping, and working key binding for the shells like bash, zsh, ksh and tcsh I do not see a better way. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262330 ------- Comment #8 from schwab@novell.com 2007-05-14 03:17 MST ------- The only way to make Alt work correctly in xterm is to remove the translations in app-defaults/XTerm. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262330 ------- Comment #9 from werner@novell.com 2007-05-14 04:04 MST ------- For the described problem this is correct, nevertheless I consits on the full key binding of xterm/konsole/rxvt/urxvt/gnome for Alt, Shift, Ctrl, Alt+Shift, Ctrl+Shift, Alt+Ctrl, Alt+Ctrl+Shift. Then I'll able to extend the /etc/inputrc and /etc/profile.d/bindkey.tcsh to make the command line system wide usable as it is now for more then 10 years. The best way for such an effort would a script using xsendkeycode or similar to be able with the help of Xfvb and the terminal emulator running this script to generate the command line key binding. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I run onto one problem: if e.g. Meta_L is mapped onto Sift+Alt_L and included in the modifier maps, the state found in ev.xkey.state is identical for Alt_L and Meta_L and leads to loosing Control_L within setup_modifiers() ... Werner, if Meta_L and Alt_L are mapped to the same modifier they should trigger
