http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=515044 Summary: At startup, dovecot is killed by ntp Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: vdboor-fora@codingdomain.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/4.2; Linux) KHTML/4.2.90 (like Gecko) SUSE At the startup of my system, dovecot is already killed by ntp. Running the startup script of dovecot manually gives the following output: # /etc/init.d/dovecot start Starting dovecot Warning: Last died with error (see error log for more information): Time just moved backwards by 6 seconds. This might cause a lot of problems, so I'll just kill myself now. http://wiki.dovecot.org/TimeMovedBackwards Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Well. in comment #1 you start dovecot and instantly dies as the time is still running backwards.
My timeline is the following: - My system boots up - dovecot starts - ntp starts - dovecot is killed by NTP Next... - I login to my system - I open a email app - can't connect to dovecot - run the command as described in my first comment. This gives the additional warning message that dovecot has been killed.
What should we do about it? Make sure dovecot is started *after* ntp.
Point is, this all mainly happens at bootup without any interaction from my side. Maybe ntp kicks in a bit later. I'm just observing this from the outside atm, and have to start dovecot manually many times.
I will not change the behavior of dovecot in that regard. I fully trust Timo this is on purpose and for a good reason. So do I
