[Bug 617480] New: Unable to install a guest OS
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=617480 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=617480#c0 Summary: Unable to install a guest OS Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: RC 1 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: jdouglas@novell.com ReportedBy: kalarsen@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- I downloaded the RC1 DVD to try xen and btrfs. I used the yast2 "Create Virtual Machine" and did the initial configuration. When I clicked "oK" to begin the install, the screen flashed and I was taken back to the login screen. I tried this multiple times with multiple openSUSE 11.3 installs. I was not able to get it to work. Note: I have both ext4 and btrfs partitions. I was unable to install on either of them. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I noticed that openSUSE 11.3 RC2 was available so I downloaded and tried it. The problem still exists on the one computer ( Dell PowerEdge T105 )
I will attach the requested log / information files.
The problem from my perspective appears to be virt-manager's ability to give me a console so that I can complete the virtual machine install. If I use the yast2 "Virtual Machine Manager" or "virt-manager" to try to reconnect to the console after the initial failure, I see the same problem. That is that the screen flashes (switches back to text console I believe - it happens so quickly that it is hard to tell) then drops me back to the main graphical login screen.
Yeah, I think it might be a console problem. The VM is already started and running. Could you try "vncviewer localhost:5900" to see if the console could be displayed? Then we can confirm if it is a console connect problem. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
From xenstore in Commnet #19, "vncport" item can't be found in "/local/domain/DomID/console/vnc-port". So I guess virt-manager can't find

From xenstore in Commnet #19, "vncport" item can't be found in "/local/domain/DomID/console/vnc-port". So I guess virt-manager can't find the vnc-port of this Domain or vncserver haven't initialized correctly.
Hi, James, thanks for your attention. But there IS vnc-port specified in xenstore-ls (see in following), maybe you just see the wrong place. And from virt-manager log, it already tried to connect localhost:5900. So it's not the problem that virt-manager can't find vnc-port. ---------------------------------------------------------------- console = "" ring-ref = "1196285" port = "2" limit = "1048576" type = "ioemu" vnc-port = "5900" tty = "/dev/pts/3" ---------------------------------------------------------------- It might be that the console cannot be connected successfully. Maybe after Kal try "vncviewer", we can confirm. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The "vncviewer localhost:5900" did give me a console and I was able to continue with the install, at least until it tried the reboot near the end. At that point I lost the console again the the vm did not restart. A manual attempt to restart the vm "xm start sles10" failed with the following:
Error: Kernel image does not exist: /tmp/kernel.QZPqjV
It sounds like vm-install did not finish its task of adjusting the config file during post-install reboot (after _install_ system has shutdown but before _installed_ system is booted). Perhaps the vm-install process was terminated somehow. You should be able to fix your vm be editing /etc/xen/vm/<vm-name> - remove kernel and ramdisk line - add bootloader="/usr/bin/pygrub" and bootargs="" - change on_reboot="destroy" to on_reboot="restart" Then xm new /etc/xen/vm/<vm-name>;xm start <vm-name>;vncviewer ::<assigned-vnc-port> -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From above tests and analysis, I think the problem should be in some X server surrounding liraries (for example, gtk libraries). Maybe some libraries updated but not consistent with others. But surely it's not related to xen,virt-manager or vminstall.

From Kal's previous mail, virt-manager and virt-viewer both have the problem ( see at the bottom). Since I could only access Kal's PC desktop by starting its vncserver and then using vncviewer to connect, in that way, everything is OK, I didn't see the problem.
And as I know, with different hardware (graphics card, monitor, ...), certainly X server will call different modules. gtkvnc.so side: #ldd /usr/lib64/python2.6/site-packages/gtkvnc.so will list all dependencies of gtkvnc.so. Since vncviewer access (use vncserver of problem machine) has no problem, possibly gtkvnc.so side itself is working, but when it sends some request to X server, there is some problem in X server to handle it; if using vncserver, it sends request to Xvnc server, Xvnc server can handle it well.

Chunyan Liu The pc was dhcp and got reassigned to ip 137.65.156.72 on the reboot. I started the sles10-2 vm and then tried to connect to it from virt-manager and then virt-viewer. Both times the screen flashed and it dropped me back to the login screen. -Kal- -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

If anybody could write a summary of that bugreport and underline what the real issue is and how to reproduce this would be helpful. Since I have no clue of Xen ...
Problem machine: one of Kal's machine. Other machines do not have this problem. Issue: The problem machine is started and enter graphics mode. There are two applications: virt-manager and virt-viewer, both call gtkvnc.so to open a console and display graphics of virtual machine within the console, the result is the console screen flashs and then exit. But, Remote access to the problem machine using "ssh -X", then start those applications, console displays grahpics normally. No problem. Start vncserver of problem machine (suppose display is :1), then remote access to its desktop with "vncviewer <IP>:1", then start those applications, console displays graphics normally. Also no problem. Since "ssh -X" uses X server of remote PC to draw graphics, and vncserver start Xvnc not X, they both have no problem, we suspected reason of the original issue should be in the X server and related libraries on the problem machine. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The problem machine is started and enter graphics mode. There are two applications: virt-manager and virt-viewer, both call gtkvnc.so to open a console and display graphics of virtual machine within the console, the result is the console screen flashs and then exit.
Is it only the console window to the virtual machine that exits, or is it the whole graphical login session on the host OS?
Remote access to the problem machine using "ssh -X", then start those applications, console displays grahpics normally. [...]
Since "ssh -X" uses X server of remote PC to draw graphics, [...] we suspected reason of the original issue should be in the X server and related libraries on the problem machine.
To cross-check this assumption, you can use "ssh -X localhost" on the problem machine and "ssh -X" from the problem machine to a known working host and in both cases try to start the applications. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
