[Bug 601589] New: 3D effects (compositing) can not be enabled => KDE 4.4.2 + fglrx 8.723 (ATI Catalyst 10.4)
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=601589 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=601589#c0 Summary: 3D effects (compositing) can not be enabled => KDE 4.4.2 + fglrx 8.723 (ATI Catalyst 10.4) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: freespacer@gmx.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=358361) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=358361) output of systemsettings -> "Personal settings" User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 SUSE/3.6.3-1.2 Firefox/3.6.3 Hi, I have recently made an updated of the display driver. -> ATI Catalyst 10.4 -> fglrx 8.723 I use KDE 4.4.2 from this repo: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Factory:/Desktop/openSU... After I installed the display driver, I rebooted the computer and the 3D effects (compositing) are no longer shown. Only 3D applications and 3D games use the display driver to display 3D objects. When I perform the following steps. KDE try to enable compositing, but one second later KDE disable compositing again: 1. Go to "Personal settings" -> Desktop -> Desktop Effects 2. Go to the tab "General" 3. enable composite -> "Resume Compositing" This issue only happens with compositing type "openGL". I assume the openGL detection makes trouble. When I selected an another compositing type like "XRender". It partially works, but it is not a satisfactory solution. I open the console and type some commands to get information about GLX: # fglrxinfo display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 3870 OpenGL version string: 3.2.9756 Compatibility Profile Context This command shows me a 3D cube with gears: # fgl_glxgears Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer 1956 frames in 5.0 seconds = 391.200 FPS 2518 frames in 5.0 seconds = 503.600 FPS 2209 frames in 5.0 seconds = 441.800 FPS .. and this shows me a 3D cube with gears too: # glxgears *** NOTE: Don't use glxgears as a benchmark. OpenGL implementations are not optimized for frame rates >> 60fps, thus these numbers are meaningless when compared between vendors. 5011 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1001.724 FPS 6247 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1248.711 FPS 5882 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1176.378 FPS 6273 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1254.183 FPS 6447 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1289.266 FPS .. # fglrxinfo display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 3870 OpenGL version string: 3.2.9756 Compatibility Profile Context I upload 3 another important files about system information: - output of systemsettings -> "Personal settings" - system configuration report file from atigetsysteminfo.sh - output of glxinfo The only workaround that works: I go to the "Personal settings" -> Desktop -> Desktop Effects, then I go to the tab "Advanced" and checked the option "Disable functionally checks". - Who is to blame now? fglrx 8.723 or KDE 4.4.2 ? - Can we solve this issue in KDE 4.4.2 or this is a bug in fglrx driver again? Kind Regards, Sebastian (openSUSE Member) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go to "Personal settings" -> Desktop -> Desktop Effects 2. Go to the tab "General" 3. Try to enable compositing -> "Resume Compositing" Actual Results: KDE try to enable compositing, but shortly disable it again. Expected Results: Kde enable compositing. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Besides, I don't see what exactly gives you the idea that a breakage after installing the driver is a result of anything else than the driver in the first place. You need to complain to the developers of the driver. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
