I have tried to reproduce the problem with small amounts of data to make it easier to debug, but I couldn’t. With a huge amount of data, like my complete home directory, the problem *always* happens. I have the impression that rsync hangs at files which have either changed or have been deleted since rsync started, but I am not completely sure about this.
