Having read #9 and #12, it sounds like this is solved. However, I decided to go through this in order. So this is the terminal output from running "gdb --args gnomesu ..." and its backtrace. For this run, the installer got as far as the language selection. The main installer window disappeared, but the language selection window appeared. I selected English (US) and clicked on it, and the selection window disappeared, but the main window did not re-appear. The program stopped at that point with no windows open. I hit Enter a couple of times and then gave up and used Cntrl-C to start the backtrace. What was I doing *just* before the crash? That varied from run to run, but in general nothing. In most cases I booted the disc, and I usually set up "System Monitor" before running the installer. In the normal cases, the installer crashed on its own without any input from me. I was just watching it. In the cases running "gdb", again, after I "Cancelled" the Error window, it ran a bit further and crashed without my doing anything else, at least until after it had crashed. No, I never did try to re-adjust the time. It became clear that the hardware clock was not being corrupted, so I was not concerned about what was being shown on the display. Aside from this installation I have had a very busy day. The short answer is that the installation has worked fairly acceptably. There were minor issues. About the partitions: The drive on my Acer Aspire One is a 120 GB 5400 SATA drive. The default setup of the Acer Aspire One had 1 large Primary partition "/dev/sda1" covering all but the last 1 GB of space, all for the default "Linpus" software. The second primary partition "/dev/sda2" was a 1 GB swap partition. Prior to attempting this installation, I shrank "/dev/sda1" down to about 40 GB and moved the swap partition to the end of the resized "/dev/sda1". I then created an Extended partition for the rest of the drive that was left empty, waiting for this OpenSuSE 11.1 installation. The installer script created a 20 GB "/dev/sda5" partition mounted as "/" and a "/dev/sda6" partition filling the rest of the extended partition, mounted as "/home". It is using the /dev/sda2" partition as the "swap". I actually would have preferred to keep a separate "swap" partition out of theoretical issues regarding the "swap" file format (in theory, you cannot assume they will be the same format, so this really should not have been done). However, I accepted this layout and it is working for now. I will eventually shrink "/home" down to about 30 GB and create a new "common" data partition shared by both operating systems. The "linpus" partition "/dev/sda1" *is* mounted and accessible from within OpenSuSE 11.1, so I am not entirely sure what was meant by the error report that it failed to mount "linpus". However, the grub "menu.lst" is wrong and, for now, I cannot boot "linpus". I know roughly what the problem is. The entry for the Linpus partition is: "rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1" Yast2 has copied this as-is. However, the "chainloader" is probably not in the same place, making this incorrect. I will have to work out what to do about the kernel later. The day after the installation, I eventually decided to update the OpenOffice stuff. The recommendations were based on "zypper". However, I thought I would try YaST2 Online Update. As I expected, it did not work. Neither did "Software Management". I eventually updated with "zypper" through a terminal window, which did work and I am almost completely updated for now. The Problem seems to be a combination of the screen resolution which is 1024 x 600, and the bottom panel, which reduces this size even further, and "compiz". I suspected "compiz" because, it was not used before in the default installation, and many people (like myself) never bothered with it. I disabled "Control Center -> Desktop Effects" (there is a single checkbox) and was able to use the YaST2 "Online Update" and "Software Management". Later (actually a few minutes ago) I restarted the LiveCD and went straight to the "Desktop Effects" and disabled it and started the Live Installer. This worked properly. I aborted at the partitioner, but I have no reason to doubt that this will work. 2. I have noticed that there have been other problems due to "over size" windows while working with the LiveCD, and even the installed version, all with the "Desktop Effects" active. The problem is more pervasive than just YaST2. The problems with YaST2 were just more serious. So there seems to be a pervasive problem that "compiz" is not passing (Window Size) - (Bottom Panel Height) to processes opening new windows in general. 3. The fact that the window is 1024 * 600 adds to the problem because this is a new size and screen format. I think some programs might be looking at the 1024 width and assuming a 768 height, which should not have been assumed in the first place. Anyway I might not be able to add more until tomorrow. Unfortunately, that ate up any time I might have used to download the ISO and burn the disc to see if the Install situation has changed. However, I can say a couple of things about Beta 5: 1. "Desktop Effects" still does not retain its active/inactive switch setting across a reboot. This really has to be fixed, even if all other problems are fixed. Some people are not going to want it active anyway. 2. I tried running "Yast -> Software Management" and it failed while "Effects" were active and the Window (which was placed mainly above the screen) eventually disappears. After we found that it could be installed with "Qt" I think we really could have reduced it at that point. After that it was maybe critical. After we found out that we could get around a lot of problems by turning off "compiz" it could really have been reduced further. There is a lot of work to be done, but really, it is nothing more than "very annoying".
