[Bug 557833] New: Thunderbird: Using an egregious amount of disk space
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=557833 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=557833#c0 Summary: Thunderbird: Using an egregious amount of disk space Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Firefox AssignedTo: bnc-team-mozilla@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jeffm@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Development Blocker: --- I have Thunderbird configured to sync locally with two accounts, gmail and imap.suse.de. Both accounts, according to folder properties and their respective web interfaces, are about 1 GB in size. I have emptied the trash and compacted folders numerous times on both of them. Currently, on disk, my gmail account takes up 7.1 GB. My imap.suse.de account takes up 1.8G. The search sqlite database takes up another 2.9 GB. That is *12 GB* just for Thunderbird! Part of this is due to Thunderbird not recognizing that the [Gmail] folder duplicates things. I'm not sure how to account for that, but even if it counts messages twice - that's still a huge waste. I have a 30 GB /home file system, which historically has been well more than enough space for normal use, an openSUSE ISO image, and several expanded and built kernel trees. With openSUSE 11.2, I've had to remove the ISO image as well as most of the trees, *just* to accommodate Thunderbird. Thunderbird is routinely running my file system out of space, corrupting its own indexes, and today it even corrupted my Address Book for which it had saved no recent backup. Bart Whitely noted in bug #543942 that removing the cached files and having it re-download the messages shrunk his caches by a factor of 100. I did eliminate my "All Mail" folder from being downloaded, but downloading all the messages still only added up to about 218MB. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Let's level set. If you have global indexing enabled, and mail synced for all folders and accounts to local disk (and gmail's All Mail folder unsubscribed, i.e. excluded) then the amount of disk used by thunderbird should be: 1. total of all account space as reported by mail server, plus 2. about 10% of #1 for .msf folder index files, plus 3. for the global index sqlite file, not more than #1 Is this what are you seeing with Thunderbird 3.1? Or is it much more? FWIW, disk usage can be more finely tuned with the glodaquilla add-on. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Still seeing ~ 11GB with Thunderbird 12.0.1. global-messages-db.sqlite is 1.6G The ImapMail directory contains most of the content, as expected. 4 home.jeffreymahoney.com.msf 4 imap.gmail-1.com.msf 4 imap.gmail.com.msf 4 imap.novell.com.msf 4 imap.suse.de.msf 336508 imap.novell.com 1488808 imap.suse.de 1513516 home.jeffreymahoney.com 1874400 imap.gmail-1.com 3817724 imap.gmail.com As a test, I removed the account associated with imap.gmail-1.com. No cleanup occured. It left 1.8G abandoned on disk. I turned off synchronization on my Gmail "All Mail" folder and it left 1.6G abandoned on disk. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=557833 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=557833#c3 --- Comment #3 from Wayne Mery <vseerror@lehigh.edu> 2012-05-14 19:50:22 UTC --- indeed, removing accounts does not remove already used space - Bug 274452 - When accounts are removed, files associated with that account are not deleted https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=274452 unsubscribing "All Mail" of course would not remove the folder file - you'd have to do that manual too. Your numbers in GB 0.3 GB imap.novell.com 1.5 GB imap.suse.de 1.5 GB home.jeffreymahoney.com 1.8 GB imap.gmail-1.com 3.8 GB imap.gmail.com ------ 8.9 GB FWIW, 1.6 GB for the SQL seems a little high. perhpas because of your gmail situation. Suggest you install glodaquilla addon, which will allow you to exclude certain folders from indexing - which will help both with speed and space -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
