https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231083 jsmeix@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |INVALID ------- Comment #1 from jsmeix@novell.com 2007-01-02 03:48 MST ------- When you select the Epson EPL 6200L is listed in YaST, you get this information message: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This printer is not supported by openSUSE. Find information regarding supported and unsupported printers in your product documentation. If the printer can be switched to support a standard printer language (PostScript, PCL, or ESC/P), it can be configured as that type of printer. Ask the vendor of the printer whether this model understands a standard printer language directly (not through a driver emulation) and how to switch the printer into the standard printer language mode, for example, using an additional PostScript module. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why do you think it is a major bug in openSUSE when we don't provide any existing GDI printer driver? It is no "major" bug because it is no bug at all. It is even no enhancement request because the epl6200l driver in the epsoneplijs driver software package has license issues as described it its README file: --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The ijs-derived part follows the same licence as ijs. The rest of the code is under the GNU public license, except "epl_compress.c". .. The content of "epl_compress.c" may have issues with Epson which we are not yet sure about. Therefore we hereby explicitly ask whoever uses the content of that file, NOT to use it for any purpose other than in relation to the Epson EPL series of printers. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- If we distributed this driver we could not make sure that it is not used for any purpose other than in relation to the Epson EPL series of printers. Therefore we cannot distribute such a driver. See our documentation, e.g. in the package opensuse-manual_en /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/cha.p.html /usr/share/doc/manual/opensuse-manual_en/manual/sec.drucken.prob.html "Printers without Standard Printer Language Support" or in our support database http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Purchasing_a_Printer_and_Compatibility and http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:GDI_Printers in particular note this section --------------------------------------------------------------------------- We will never risk causing license problems only to have some kind of support for such problematic hardware. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231083 ------- Comment #2 from alberto.passalacqua@tin.it 2007-01-02 05:35 MST ------- So it's better to remove the printer from the list in Yast, don't you think? It's misleading to leave it there, considering that SuSE can't actually make it work. Even by installing the driver available at sourceforge. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231083 ------- Comment #3 from alberto.passalacqua@tin.it 2007-01-02 05:42 MST ------- Btw I checked to be sure. When I select the printer, I get no message which warns me about the unsupported printer/driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231083 ------- Comment #4 from jsmeix@novell.com 2007-01-02 05:57 MST ------- The text shown in YaST is helpful and clear. It helps the user not to waste his time with frustrating and useless attempts to get such a hardware running with what we provide out of the box in openSUSE. When we know about a particular model which is not supported by us, we want to have the user informed instead of leave him alone and let him try out various hopeless attempts e.g by selecting models with similar names which are actually incompatible, compare for example the supported PCL printer http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Epson-EPL-6100 with the unsupported GDI printer http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Epson-EPL-6100L What do you mean with "SuSE can't actually make it work. Even by installing the driver available at sourceforge"? We cannot have a software with license issues in openSUSE. Of course we also cannot download and/or install software with license issues from whatever external source. On the other hand you as an owner of an Epson EPL series printer can of course download and install this driver and then you can let the driver run in an openSUSE system but it must be you who downloads and installs software with possible license issues. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231083 ------- Comment #5 from jsmeix@novell.com 2007-01-02 06:06 MST ------- Regarding comment #3: Do not confuse the unsupported "EPL 6200L" with the supported PostScript level3 printer "EPL 6200 PS3". When you don't get the message for the "EPL 6200L", the only reason I know is that you have somehow installed a PPD file for this model. In this case it looks as if it is supported for YaST because it must be possible that a user installs a third-party driver (which includes the actual driver and a matching PPD file) and then set it up with the new driver in YaST. We do not provide a PPD file for the "EPL 6200L" in openSUSE because we don't provide a driver for it in openSUSE. How did you get a PPD file for this model? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231083 ------- Comment #6 from alberto.passalacqua@tin.it 2007-01-02 07:00 MST ------- About comment #4: I know and clearly understand license issues and I wasn't putting them in doubt (even though other distributions puts the driver in the non-gpl or non-oss repository). I was stating that the driver downloaded from sourceforge doesn't seem to work in openSUSE. About comment #5: I first of all installed openSUSE and tried to configure the printer at setup time, without warnings. Then I tried to install and configure it using the driver and PPD from sourceforge, still without success. To conclude, I solved the problem for me by attaching the printer to an ubuntu-based machine right today. I reported the bug because I didn't get the warning message and I believed it was a SuSE issue. However, being the hardware not supported out of the box, it's OK to close the bugreport. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231083 ------- Comment #7 from jsmeix@novell.com 2007-01-02 07:31 MST ------- I am interested to find out why you didn't get the "unsupported" message in YaST after a new installation of openSUSE. Can you run as root the command lpinfo -m | grep 6200 and attach the output as mime type text/plain to this bug? Can you mark your PPD from sourceforge so that I know which PPDs have been there after a new installation of openSUSE? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231083 ------- Comment #8 from alberto.passalacqua@tin.it 2007-01-02 11:28 MST ------- Unfortunately I don't have the installation where I tried to configure the printer anymore. I'll see if I can try again (the printer is shared in an office). Sorry for the inconvenience. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231083 ------- Comment #9 from jsmeix@novell.com 2007-01-03 02:44 MST ------- I have another idea why you didn't get the "unsupported" message, perhaps this one is related to bug #220712. YaST may falsely automatically select the PPD for the "EPSON EPL-6200 PS3" or whatever other wrong PPD - this may also depend on which manufacturer and model strings are autodetected for your particular printer. In this case YaST won't show you the dialog where you must select the manufacturer and the model manually. If you try again, watch if YaST selects a PPD automatically and if yes, please report which PPD: After you finished YaST the actually used PPD is /etc/cups/ppd/<queue-name>.ppd - please attach it as mime type text/plain. Furthermore we need the YaST log for exactly one setup of your printer. If you try again, please provide the YaST log file as follows: 1. Have a clean state to start: Remove all your print queues in YaST and finish YaST. 2. Move the old YaST log file away: mv /var/log/YaST2/y2log /var/log/YaST2/y2log.old 3. Start YaST and do again setup your pinter. Finish YaST and save the log file: cp -p /var/log/YaST2/y2log /var/log/YaST2/y2log.save 4. Attach /var/log/YaST2/y2log.save as attachment with mime type "text plain" to this bug. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
