[Bug 389684] New: X window not configured properly after installation
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=389684 Summary: X window not configured properly after installation Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: SaX2 AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: mmrazik@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=214616) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=214616) y2logs After the installation of openSUSE11 beta2 the X window system is not working. One of the consequences of this bug is that "/etc/init.d/xdm restart" is trying to start /opt/kde3/.../kdm instead of the installed kdm4 (which of course fails). After I executed sax2 manually I configured monitor (there was none) to VESA 800x600 (this computer is connected to a KVM switch) everything works ok (even /etc/init.d/xdm is trying to start the correct kdm). Monitor (kvm swtich) is attached to the "nVidia GeForce FX 5200" gfx card (this external card is also enabled in the bios of the system): amy:~ # hwinfo --gfxcard 09: PCI 600.0: 0300 VGA compatible controller (VGA) [Created at pci.302] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_10de_322 Unique ID: vTuk.OWydcKKrBZE Parent ID: 6NW+.two+GgbUMg7 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1e.0/0000:06:00.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:06:00.0 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "nVidia GeForce FX 5200 (0x0322)" Vendor: pci 0x10de "nVidia Corporation" Device: pci 0x0322 "GeForce FX 5200 (0x0322)" SubVendor: pci 0x10b0 "CardExpert Technology" SubDevice: pci 0x0401 Revision: 0xa1 Memory Range: 0xe8000000-0xe8ffffff (rw,non-prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xe0000000-0xe7ffffff (rw,prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xe9020000-0xe903ffff (ro,prefetchable, disabled) IRQ: 11 (no events) I/O Ports: 0x3c0-0x3df (rw) Module Alias: "pci:v000010DEd00000322sv000010B0sd00000401bc03sc00i00" Driver Info #0: XFree86 v4 Server Module: nv Driver Info #1: XFree86 v4 Server Module: nvidia 3D Support: yes Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #15 (PCI bridge) 32: PCI 02.0: 0380 Display controller [Created at pci.302] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_8086_29c2 Unique ID: _Znp.yy7N4KdjHg2 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:00:02.0 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "Intel G33" Vendor: pci 0x8086 "Intel Corporation" Device: pci 0x29c2 "G33" SubVendor: pci 0x8086 "Intel Corporation" SubDevice: pci 0x5044 Revision: 0x02 Memory Range: 0xe9300000-0xe937ffff (rw,non-prefetchable) I/O Ports: 0x2460-0x2467 (rw) Memory Range: 0xd0000000-0xdfffffff (rw,prefetchable) Memory Range: 0xe9200000-0xe92fffff (rw,non-prefetchable) IRQ: 9 (no events) Module Alias: "pci:v00008086d000029C2sv00008086sd00005044bc03sc80i00" Driver Info #0: XFree86 v4 Server Module: intel Driver Info #1: XFree86 v4 Server Module: intel 3D Support: yes Extensions: dri Config Status: cfg=no, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Primary display adapter: #9 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What's the output of
grep DISPLAYMANAGER= /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager
I checked that prior to calling SaX2 manually and it was set to "kdm4".
Since you already called SaX2 manually the interesting /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files are probably no longer available. Please reinstall and attach these.
Will do. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This change is in Beta2. I don't understand why it doesn't work. Can I login to the machine to figure this out?
Sure, but I will reinstall first. After I configured X I do not see this error anymore. Once the installation is ready I'll update this bug with logs and credentials. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I suggest to add /var/log/SaX.log.

if there is no SaX.log sax wasn't even called. Just do the following:
init 3 sax2
===> does it work y/n ? ===> if [n] cancel the program and send the file
Yes, this works (I already stated that in the bug description). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

BTW: the bug summary is a bit misleading... X-configuration was called and YaST didn't crash. This was my conclusion since no /var/log/SaX.log exists after installation.
