[Bug 731612] New: Kmail. Multiple copies of email from POP3 servers received at random times
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731612 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731612#c0 Summary: Kmail. Multiple copies of email from POP3 servers received at random times Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Applications AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: martin@crazyplace.co.uk QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 Kmail when configured to leave a copy of emails on pop3 server, will keep retrieving multiple copies on each send/receive. This happens not all the time and not to every email, seems to be related to emails that have had filters applied to them that relocates the email to a different folder. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1.Add pop3 accounts 2.set to leave a copy on the server 3.configure filters for incoming mail Actual Results: multiple copies of the same emails received Expected Results: Once an email has been received once it should not be collected from the pop3 server again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does the duplication happen if you do not use filtering on incoming mail?
No. Over the last 24hrs I have tested this and concluded that it is only emails that no longer exist in the inbox that get duplicated. Filtering to another folder results in multiple duplicates, deleting from the inbox results in a single duplicate, unless you delete that in which case you get another . Manually drag a message from the inbox to another folder ( duplicate appears in inbox on next fetch) 2. Automatic use of filters on subject or from, to automatically move a message to folder A upon receipt ( duplicates appear in folder A on next fetch ) 3.As 2 above but if you then manually delete message from folder A ( duplicates appear in folder A on next fetch ) Multiple messages are NOT received in the following cases:- 1 Manually delete a message from the inbox ( move to wastebin ) 2 Messages left in inbox. The above effects are replicated with emails from the 4 separate POP servers that I use ( gmail, my ISP's, Fasthosts and a Local linux mail server ) In it's current state KMail 4.7.2 is rapidly approaching unusable for me, Just in the time taken to write this I have received 45 new emails, of which I have to check and see which if not all are duplicates ! Hope that helps. Martin -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

@Max Lin: please check if the following cases cause POP mail duplication
'Leave messages on server checked'
then
1) Filter messages, resulting mail delivered to inbox auto filter specific mail to folder A, after fetch mails, duplicate mail appears in folder A.
2) Filter messages, mail delivered to inbox on previous fetch then manually deleted => message fetched again to inbox removed fetched mail on inbox then fetch new mail, new duplicate mail appears in folder A.
3) Filter messages, mail devilvered to non-inbox => another copy of each filtered on each fetch copy folder A to folder B, mail delivered to folder B then fetch new mails, new duplicate mail appears in folder A.
4) Don't filter messages, mail delivered to inbox on previous fetch then manually deleted => message fetched again to inbox no issue, works fine.
If I understand Martin correctly, 4) should not cause the message to be redelivered.

Ok lets try again
Multiple messages ARE received in the following cases:-
1. Manually drag a message from the inbox to another folder ( duplicate appears in inbox on next fetch)
I can not reproduce this.
2. Automatic use of filters on subject or from, to automatically move a message to folder A upon receipt ( duplicates appear in folder A on next fetch )
Confirmed! I got duplicate mail even I don't need fetch again.
3.As 2 above but if you then manually delete message from folder A ( duplicates appear in folder A on next fetch )
Multiple messages are NOT received in the following cases:-
1 Manually delete a message from the inbox ( move to wastebin ) 2 Messages left in inbox.
The above effects are replicated with emails from the 4 separate POP servers that I use ( gmail, my ISP's, Fasthosts and a Local linux mail server )

Hope that helps. Martin
OTOH, I tried disable auto filtering for incoming messages, replace as manual filtering, no duplicate mail appears in filtered folder. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm having the problem that it moves mail from an online IMAP account even though I've tried all options to exclude this account. It turns out that this reproducibly happens only on startup of KMail, when the IMAP server hasn't even been contacted yet. KMail seems to sync the cache, finds the cached mail from the IMAP account, moves it according to some filter rule that does not apply to this account and then, when it connects to that account syncs that bogus change back to IMAP. I suspect that this is a quite similar course of events than what is described above for POP3 mails left on server. I can open a new bug if not. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
