[Bug 210224] New: Please split of -devel packages from gnome-doc-utils mono-nunit monodoc-core gtkhtml-sharp gnome-spell2
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210224 Summary: Please split of -devel packages from gnome-doc-utils mono-nunit monodoc-core gtkhtml-sharp gnome-spell2 Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Development AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: cthiel@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: lrupp@novell.com See $subject. binary packages should not require -devel packages. Reading back in this bug though, I'm not longer sure what the problem actually is for gnome-spell2. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210224 ------- Comment #7 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2006-10-19 10:49 MST ------- OK, just summarizing. The status now is: - gnome-doc-utils: Is already split. - mono-nunit: Requires glib2-devel; solution pending. - monodoc-core: Has been fixed differently by simply removing the dependency on mono-devel. This dependency was unnecessary. - gtkhtml-sharp: I don't see what's wrong with this. It doesn't have dependencies on -devel packages. - gnome-spell2: Doesn't have dependencies on -devel packages, therefore reverted. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210224 lrupp@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEEDINFO |ASSIGNED Info Provider|cthiel@novell.com | ------- Comment #8 from lrupp@novell.com 2006-10-19 11:37 MST ------- The main problem with the gnome packages are their requirements. I don't have an overview over all gnome packages, jet. But I fully agree with comment #1. Please look if a "user" package like gnome-doc-utils requires any "*devel" package (like libxml2-devel) during runtime. We don't speek about developers who want to build packages - we speek about users who don't need any devel packages on their system. The problem in CD ordering: if gnome-doc-utils requires libxml2-devel, we have to add this package to the same media. But libxml2-devel requires other devel packages (like: glibc-devel readline-devel zlib-devel) which want to be on the same media then. Remember that we didn't have this problem in the past without the libzypp-resolver. But now the "devel-Requirements" of some Gnome packages result in a "1.2 GB CD1 media". So there a two important things why you should look for "Requires: *-devel" packages: 1) think about users without any need to have a compiler on their system 2) think about lonesome CD mastering guys who are limited to the current CD sizes ;-) FYI: Currently with Alpha5plus the most work seems to be done for the packages that are on the CD Medias. So for me this bug can be closed. But please investigate some time during your "patch-cleanup" phase to look for point 1 (for users who have the factory tree as installation source) packages which are not on the media. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Not yet: There is one package mentioned in the summary of this bug which *indeed* had and still has a -devel dependency: mono-nunit requires glib2-devel. I guess this bug should now go to a mono maintainer to review if this requirement is really correct and necessary (because all the GNOME ones are either already done or simply not affected by this problem). I'm also removing the dependency of bug 213621 on this one because it is resolved. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=210224 ------- Comment #10 from wberrier@novell.com 2006-10-20 23:30 MST ------- mono-nunit: I have no idea why this depended on glib2-devel. This has been removed in the 1.1.18.1 submission. monodoc-core: Also wasn't sure why it depended on mono-devel. BuildRequires, yes, Requires, no. gtkhtml-sharp: as stated before, not sure why it's in this list. There are many mono packages that depend on -devel packages. This problem exists because the runtime looks for .so files, not the versioned .so file. This can be overcome by creating dllmaps in .config files for all assemblies that pinvoke resolving to a .so file at runtime, but it seems there should be a better way. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Ex: gtkhtml-sharp2 Requires: gtkhtml2. With the above change, this manual requirement will not be needed and it will automatically depend on libgtkhtml-3.8.so.15 instead. I'm testing this in the buildservice now, and will check into factory after my tests are done. An update to rpm in autobuild also needs to be made so that the assembly's config files are considered for parsing include. Will mark to fix once the rpm changes are accepted. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
