I can confirm that by using these binaries, I am not seeing the crash anymore. Although, the express install will still not start due to a crash in qemu-system-x86. I do not know if this is caused by the way boxes invokes qemu-system-x86 or that the problem exists with qemu. There is no useful coredump generated:

Coredump entry has no core attached (neither internally in the journal nor externally on disk).
