I was able to copy .evolution, etc. into place, import the gconf backup file, and then start evolution and have it successfully migrate to the new sqlite format. I agree, this will create a misconception to the users that data cannot be imported. Now since it is boiled to a bug in plugin, this should not be difficult to fix.
