[Bug 262960] New: [feature-request] Please add Network Bridge capability into Yast
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262960 Summary: [feature-request] Please add Network Bridge capability into Yast Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: al4321@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com hi all ! While Linux supports Network-bridging, Yast seems not. Currently to install bridging I need: -uml utilities package (must be downloaded from http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/user-mode-linux/uml_utilities_20040406.ta...) -ifconfig (included with SUSE) -TAP kernel module: check for /dev/net/tun (included with SUSE) Plus, on top of that I need to know the right commands to setup network bridging properly. On Windows XP, by contrast, you need nothing to install, as everything included with the OS itself, plus it only a few mouse clicks away to configure it properly. (It's located in the Network Connections.) I think, that since openSUSE wants to remake their Yast Network Module anyways for 10.3, it would be smart to include Network-bridging on the way. -Alexey -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262960 ------- Comment #1 from al4321@gmail.com 2007-04-10 11:26 MST ------- Correction: -uml utilities package and TAP kernel module only required when you setup bridging vs TAP interface, not bridging alone, so my apologies... For bridging you need: -bridge-utils -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262960 ------- Comment #2 from al4321@gmail.com 2007-04-10 11:45 MST ------- Update: The reason for such a feature-request, is mostly emulation/virtualization software, that today, I need to spend a lot of time, to manually configure with commands. Currently, there are several emulators/virtualizers, that I know of, that can take advantage of easier TAP networking and Bridging, it's: -Qemu -VirtualBox -Dynagen/dynamips and maybe Xen... A GUI feature like that, will ease dramatically the manual configurations required by users who use a lot of virtualization software, and it will help to empower the next generation of SUSE-networking. While it's arguable if it's needed to be added to an OS, or to those products, but I believe that since the problem is common along many applications, it must be solved at the OS level. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=262960 ------- Comment #3 from al4321@gmail.com 2007-04-11 15:03 MST ------- The way, I believe, it should work: 1. Yast allows creation of a bridge interface (br0..brN). just like any normal interface this must be done via "add new". 2. After you created a bridge one, a new NIC group must be created, like in Windows XP. A NIC group, means several network interfaces, isolated from the rest by horizontal line. 3. Allow user to drag-n-drop other interfaces into this group via mouse (if possible). All interfaces that are part of the bridge must be put into promiscous mode, and all IPs must be removed from them. Only the Bridge interface must have IP (or IPs). For Yast in text-mode some other user-interaction must be developed, in addition (or instead) to mouse drag-n-drop, since "gpm" mouse console driver is not always available. 4. Bridge interface must have all the characteristics of normal interface, which includes: -IP address, subnet mask -static routing -DHCP client option -all the rest of standard options available... NOTE: br0 automatically copies the MAC address of the eth0 host interface, which means that the PC will get the same IP address from most DHCP servers. -Alexey "Technologov" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
