Unfortunately it is not loading in X because ABI claims server is version 7.2. As far as I have seen, this might not be a ATI problem but resulting from the fact that the X Server is claiming to be version 7.2. being in fact patched 7.1.9 something rc2. And driver/installer is ati-driver-installer-8.34.6 supporting 7.0/7.1 of xorg server Why is this happening and how is it possible that the Server claims being version 7.2? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257060 ------- Comment #9 from deloptes@yahoo.com 2007-03-30 00:38 MST ------- Stefan, Thank you for your fast response. I must admit, that I don't know the xorg server that good. I didn't know that ABI is only XFree86 option, but anyway. It seems that xorg server uses ABI too. Regarding the kernel - well you are right. This is not suse kernel, but I mentioned this just to know, that it is possible to compile the module 8.34.6 and load it into the kernel. I should use the 2.6.20 kernel because of driver problems with 2.6.18 - no chance to bring my devices running with the default kernel - sorry. The real problem is that the server reports itself as 7.2. My question is how this can be solved. And honestly I don't think that ATI is resonsible for this, exept that it would be really nice if they have their drivers prepared while the release has been tested. I can post the logs tomorrow as I have to swap harddrives before. It's really odd - and I've installed opensuse because I tought it's very good - and it is really so - but this xorg 7.2 while being 7.1 makes me sick. reagards -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

And I see this definitely as a BUG COMMING FROM SUSE (from the Xorg Server provided) where is the ABI located - is it not a part of the X server or is it part of the kernel? If its part of the kernel I accept you close the issue. I'll have a look at the hole thing tomorrow. It should be possible to install the ati proprietary driver after driver compilation works for the kernel! regards -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I would like to ask you if you have SUSE 10.2 with a ATI card? I have been running debian and recently kubuntu without any problems for years - no problem. What I want to state with my e-mails is that there is a problem with the X Server reporting itself to be 7.2. I can not post details today - sorry for this - but none of your postings could answer this question. I am not familiar with the X related programming - I don't know anything about the X server architecture. If you know please say who is responsible for fixing this, thank you in advance. As you don't provide a solution or answer questions but only write mails! Sorry if it is insulting you - but for me this is true! NO I have a solution to the problem and it looks like following: Prerequisites: 1) download latest version of ati driver (I have used ati-driver-installer-8.35.5-x86.x86_64.run) 2) download the appropriate patch for 2.6.20 kernel wget http://whoopie.gmxhome.de/linux/patches/2.6.20/fglrx-8.35.5-for-2.6.20.patch Installation 3a) create rpm for 10.2 (you should choose to build SUSE rpm and because SUSE10.2 is still not listed choose 10.1) sh ati-driver-installer-8.35.5-x86.x86_64.run 3b) install the rpm rpm -Uvh fglrx_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.35.5-1.i386.rpm 3c) patch the source and backup cd /usr/src/kernel-modules/fglrx/ patch -p0 < PATH_TO_WHERE_WAS_SAVED/fglrx-8.35.5-for-2.6.20.patch cd /usr/src/ tar cjvf fglrx-backup.tar.bz2 kernel-modules/fglrx/ 4a) remove RPM, rebuild and install rpm -e fglrx_6_9_0_SUSE101-8.35.5 tar xjvf fglrx-backup.tar.bz2 cd kernel-modules/fglrx/ 4b) change the clean taarget code to following: vi Makefile .... .... clean: rm -fr *.o *.ko .??* or manually clean the code rm -fr *.o *.ko .??* 4c) build the module and copy: make cp fglrx.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/misc/ (if directoy does not exist then create it) 5a) load modules and restart xdm (actually kdm) modprobe -v fglrx 5b) check the Xorg logs more /var/log/Xorg.0.log 5c) restart X /etc/init.d/xdm restart -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257060 ------- Comment #18 from sndirsch@novell.com 2007-03-31 05:17 MST ------- So you ran into two problems. 1) You build the driver for SUSE 10.1 (I don't know why). This is reason, why it could not be loaded by X.Org on openSUSE 10.2. See my HOTWO: ============================================================================= [...] Manual driver installation for SUSE LINUX 10.0, SLES9, NLD9 and earlier Since ATI driver release 8.16.20 the ATI installer needs to be used to create SUSE/Novell RPMs. Download the ATI installer from the ATI website. http://www.ati.com --> Drivers & Software --> Linux It is possible to create RPMs for the following SUSE/Novell distros. This information has been retrieved by using the installer itself: ati-driver-installer-8.35.5-x86.x86_64.run --listpkg [...] SuSE Packages: [...] SuSE/SUSE101-IA32 SUSE 10.1 [...] SuSE/SUSE101-AMD64 SUSE 10.1 (x86_64) SuSE/SUSE102-IA32 openSUSE 10.2 SuSE/SUSE102-AMD64 openSUSE 10.2 (x86_64) [...] ============================================================================ 2) You already run kernel 2.6.20 on openSUSE 10.2, which is not supported by 8.35.5. Hopefully it will be supported by 8.36. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257060 ------- Comment #19 from deloptes@yahoo.com 2007-03-31 11:37 MST ------- Hello, I'm glad that yo uhave not been insulted by my previous mail (hopefully). I HAD to build the kernel (2.6.20) because of problems with the audio card driver and vmplayer(vmware). It is not supported by the previous or current ATI installer. I have not seen option for building RPM for 10.2 though the installer reports the correct version of the OS. After isntalling the build package (of course) the driver did not work (ABI -> kernel version mismatch). Thank you because with your help I understood that ABI was (in this case) complaining from the ATI module. Anyway with the described procedure I am VERY PLEASED NOW! A had to activate 3D (dri/drm), added my user account into the video group (so I may use DRI) and rebooted the system - for some reason it was not working before (on the fly) and I didn't have time to investigate the problem. You are really right there is option for building package for SUSE 10.2 but anyway I was in case 2 (already running the kernel with this version). If you are interested I could try to build the package and try installing it (testing it). I would like to thank everybody who helped if I knew the people responsible for this. You helped someway too, but I would like to ask you to be more specific in your postings. The bug is considered to be fixed now (for me). I think also that SUSE is a great distro - thumbs up to all using it! best reagards -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Installer is reporting SUSE10.2 when asked with option --listpkg but NOT when running! This is also a bug but anyway - as I said - I am VERY GLAD to have 3D enabled... see the attached picture snapshot1.png from what the installer does ... reagards again -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
