[Bug 456127] New: PATA_ATIIXP Failing Device Detection
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=456127 Summary: PATA_ATIIXP Failing Device Detection Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: teheo@novell.com ReportedBy: Chanankoz@earthlink.net QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Community User Created an attachment (id=257804) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=257804) /var/log/boot.msg PATA device fails to be recognized on 11.1 RC-1 LIVE CD and installed system (Installed via Net install). Live CD hangs as follows: I have a perfectly good Live CD. (md5sum checks out) but The LIVE CD hangs with... Waiting for CD/DVD drive to apper... Waiting for USB devices to settle... Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drive! reboot exception error consoles at Alt-F3/F4 rebbot exception: reboot in 120 seconds. The Fkeys do not work. I am running an AMD5200 dual-core chip It has only 4 Sata connectors and 8 USB ports..Standard SB600. OpenSuse 11.0 Live-CD worked fine. This is not exactly new hardware. My CD/DVD drive is not being recognized while testing 11.1 RC-1. I have a Lite-on CD/DVD LightScribe model. This is a PATA device installed as /dev/hb and placed on the PATA connecter of the SB600 setup...essentially the kernel is not recognizing the CD/DVD drive. This is a Gigabyte model GA-MA790X-DS4 model with an SB600. Has the driver changed in the new Kernel??Once the system is installed it appears PATA devices are not recognized on the SB600. The new driver (pata_atiixp) is seeing no device condition on IDENTIFY execution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It still shows "No Device detected". Did your SB600 have the device installed on /hda?? I am wondering here if the kernel driver is being very picky. Currently the device is installed as /hdb in slave position. In the past, prior to openSUSE 11.0, I had an IDE hard drive or a CD/DVD ROM device attached in master postion on the IDE (PATA) controller. It has been suggested by others and I believe Shane may even be aware of this issue that either the new driver or libata is extremely picky in these Kernels. As mentioned in comment #7, I have left the cd/dvd device in slave position on the IDE cabling and jumper settings and encountered this problem. When I placed the CD/DVD ROM device back on the master end of the IDE cable, it worked flawlessly. I mean both drive devices are working and recognized by the Kernel. This includes the Live CD. Essentially, I now have a device placed on /hda and /hdb. It appears that the driver and/or libata creates a "No Device present" situation if it does not find a device on the Master IDE Channel. The driver essentially doesn't look any further than the Master Channel. If it encounters no device then it doesn't poll for a second device on the slave channel. I will attach my boot log on this one so that you can see. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

For 80c and >udma33, putting a single device in the middle connector (be it master or slave) is not allowed. The unterminated aft part of the cable interferes with signaling, so the end connector should always be occupied (M/S doesn't matter). It's quite unusual for PIO to fail tho. The PIO protocol is interlocked and doesn't usually get affected much by signal degradation of this type. At any rate, it basically is wrong hardware configuration which might or might not work depending on your luck, or more accurately combination of controller, cable, the attached device and alignment of the stars. I'm resolving this as INVALID. Feel free to re-open if there's something I missed.
