[Bug 782913] New: Various Boot Loader Option problems
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782913 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782913#c0 Summary: Various Boot Loader Option problems Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: Final Platform: 64bit OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@suse.com ReportedBy: peterichardavis@gmx.net QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/15.0.1 1: On my computer, Help refers to pressing Set as Default. After an exhaustive search, I can't find any such thing to press, though the facility is in /etc/default/grub. 2: If I tick Hide Menu on Boot, I not only hide the menu but disable the choice. If I were to do that after changing the default to another operating system, I'd be unable to enter openSUSE to correct the error, and would presumably have to reinstall it. 3: When I used (K)ubuntu, I was able to set Windows as my default operating system, and reduce the Timeout in Seconds to zero without denying myself the choice of Linux. I liked to do this with my dual boot computer as an added security precaution, because I believed that most thieves wouldn't even realize that I had another operating system. With openSUSE, after doing the same thing, I did end up having to reinstall it. With 12.1, I was able to set the Timeout to 1 without disabling the choice, which at least meant that a thief would have to be fairly quick to spot what I'd done. With 12.2, I find that I have to extend that to 2 seconds, which, as I see it, is going the wrong way. I, of course, would prefer that things work the way I like, but, if openSUSE has good reasons for doing otherwise, it seems to me that it would be kind to spare the unwary from disabling the system in this way, either with a warning or by actually preventing the combination of defaulting to another system with disabling the choice of openSUSE. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Change default operating system to another. 2. Tick Hide Menu on Boot or reduce Timeout in Seconds below 2. 3. Restart computer. Actual Results: Inability to use openSUSE, requiring re-installation. Expected Results: I'd hoped to be able to start openSUSE by pressing the up arrow key without being able to see the choice on the screen. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Or you couldn't achieve set default OS in yast2 bootloader ? Sorry I'm a bit lost in your question. I apologize for not making it clear that the help to which I was referring was in YaST2, but you seem to have realized that. My point was that it refers to something that isn't there. In case you mean that my [Esc] key could reveal "Set as Default", I've tried that, but it doesn't work. I had to edit /etc/default/grub instead. If you mean that my [Esc] key could reveal the menu of operating systems, that would be the opposite of what I wanted, which was to be able to choose the system without seeing the menu. I didn't manage to do that, and found that setting Timeout in Seconds to 1 didn't hide the menu but did make it impossible to select one of the options. If I'd changed the default I'd therefore have seen the menu but been unable to start openSUSE and had to reinstall the whole system. In 3 I tried to explain what I was aiming to achieve. When I had to reinstall 12.1, I reported bug 656168. Although I've never found what was done to resolve the issue, Karl Eichwalder and Frank Sundermeyer did seem to understand the problem, so I may have explained it better there, and you might find it helps you follow my meaning. Unfortunately, it didn't work, and I remained stuck with the default system. From :
Expected Results: I'd hoped to be able to start openSUSE by pressing the up arrow key without being able to see the choice on the screen. It seems to me that you want the custom "up arrow key" feature of ubuntu be available in openSUSE. Am I right this time? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782913 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=782913#c5 --- Comment #5 from Peter Davis <peterichardavis@gmx.net> 2012-10-13 13:30:25 UTC --- It hadn't occurred to me that it was customized, and the down arrow key also worked, the result depending on where the options were in the menu, but what I'd consider ideal is that, knowing my menu, I could choose the system I wanted without needing to see them on my screen. The current openSUSE situation is what I consider the worst possible, in that by choosing a system that doesn't give access to edit GRUB, and setting Timeout in Seconds below 2 or ticking Hide Menu on Boot, I effectively destroy, as far as I've been able to determine, my openSUSE system. The compromise, if there's a reason not to implement my ideal, would be to do as much as possible to stop the unwary user from disabling openSUSE. It also seems to me that, if Help refers to it, it should be possible to press Set as Default. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
