[Bug 556413] New: Nonworking Xorg with Intel 82845G/GL in Dell Inspiron 1100
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556413#c0 Summary: Nonworking Xorg with Intel 82845G/GL in Dell Inspiron 1100 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: e_duenez@hotmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.4) Gecko/20091016 Firefox/3.5.4 I was unable to complete the installation of OpenSuSE 11.2 using the GUI in a Dell Inspiron 1100 with Intel 82845 graphics. SaX2 is unable to properly configure the display. I was never able to complete the installation, but I can boot into runlevel 3 without graphics. Runlevel 5 makes the computer crash even using safe settings at the splash screen. Reproducible: Always I have found some information online to the effect that X can be fully enabled on the Dell Inspiron 1100, but have been unable to achieve the proper results. I have the lastest version A32 of BIOS and have enabled 8mb of video memory as suggested here http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/suse-linux-help/112674-ubuntu-open-suse-del... and here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=49261 I also tried to manually create an appropriate xorg.conf with no success. A curious issue I noticed is that /proc/modules lists module "i915" as loaded, but not "i810", which I believe is the correct one. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556413 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556413#c2 Lee Matheson <lee_matheson@hotmail.com> changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |lee_matheson@hotmail.com --- Comment #2 from Lee Matheson <lee_matheson@hotmail.com> 2010-01-25 11:40:50 UTC --- I encountered what might be the same problem with a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L6820 laptop with an 82845 Intel graphics with 1.2GB of RAM. openSUSE-10.3 is installed and functioning with the i810 driver (intel driver did not work in 10.3 with this hardware) on this laptop. Using the openSUSE KDE/Gnome (also community SOAD and LXDE) liveCDs, neither 11.1 nor 11.2 would boot to X although a boot to text mode worked. Sometimes sax2 would crash when trying to configure from text, sometimes it would not crash. But when sax2 did not crash, startx would freeze. A Sidux liveCD has a similar problem. Fedora 12 liveCD did not have the problem and Fedora 12 live CD would boot to a limited 800x600 resolution. Unfortunately I no longer have access to this laptop, so I can not actively support this thread's resolution with tests. I do note this thread http://forums.opensuse.org/applications/422611-bitten-bug-suse-11-2-x11-inte... where a user booted a Puppy Linux V4.3 and then copied that xorg.conf to openSUSE-11.2, where a boot worked with the 82845 (where problem symptoms were similar). If I can obtain access to this laptop again (and I may not be able to) I will try the Puppy Linux v.4.3 work around and also see if I can obtain Xorg.0.log and y2logs (although again, my access to this laptop is limited as the laptop does not belong to me - its some one else's only PC). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556413 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556413#c3 --- Comment #3 from Lee Matheson <lee_matheson@hotmail.com> 2010-03-01 06:49:11 UTC --- I still do not have access to this Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L6820 laptop. However I note on openSUSE-11.2 KDE4 (DVD install), where the fbdev, vesa and intel driver all fail (when running sax2) that by copying the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.install on top of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, that one can get openSUSE-11.2 to boot to X in a very limited 800x600 using what appears to be the fbdev driver. .... If I ever get access to this laptop again, I'll try to dig up the Xorg.0.log and y2logs. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I changed the start up routine to use VESA and did get the system to fire up. What a mess, as I really like the 11.2 on my laptop. Finally I have a running system on the HP but cannot switch screens or logout my user without locking up graphics, this is the family box I use the laptop. When the graphics lock up I can still SSH into the box, and manually reboot, so if you need me to give you the xorg.log that pertains to the lock up and any other information I can do this. Since I believe that this is really a kernel problem I have not pursued it, just waiting to see one of these forums post that the problem is corrected. Lee, there is no laptop with 845 graphics, 845 is a desktop, not a mobile platform. Philip, if even the vesa driver doesn't work for you reliably, you likely have a complete seperate issue. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556413 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556413#c6 --- Comment #6 from Philip Weber <pcweber@gmail.com> 2010-03-22 15:10:29 UTC --- No you mistook what I said, my laptop has a different graphics chip altogether, that is not where the problem is. The problem continues to be with the Intel I845G chipset on my Desktop which is an HP Pavillion 754N. I got the system to install using the vesa driver with the Network installation disk. During the installation process the proper chip was identified and then installed in the system. The problem is with the latest version of OpenSuse 11.2 and the 845 Chip. I would venture to guess that since during the installation process there are several screens chucked into video memory the problem on the running system is the same. 1. Logging out of the KDE locks the graphics system, access is available to the system via ssh, no other combination allows for recovery to the graphics. 2. switching screens through ctrl-alt fnX locks the system as well. I guess since you did mark this as a resolved issue there is no more to do. I will wait and hope that once the kernel or the orgx recompiled the problem will go away, I would not have actually marked this as resolved since I could have provided the needed files to localize the problem.
