[Bug 544187] New: External eSATA/USB drive not recognized by the system when used as USB-drive
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=544187 User amelkv@freenet.de added comment http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=544187#c1 Summary: External eSATA/USB drive not recognized by the system when used as USB-drive Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: amelkv@freenet.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090909 SUSE/3.5.3-1.3 Firefox/3.5.3 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) I have a 2,5" 320GB Seagate Momentus 7200 (ST9320421ASG) build into an IcyBox IB-266StUS-B eSATA/USB box to be used as an external hard drive for backup and date exchange with my office computer. The drive contains three NTFS and two reiserfs partitions. There is grub in the MBR, one of the reiser partitions contains GRUB (stage files and menu.lst) and the other reiser partion has kubuntu 9.04 on it. The NTFS partitions contain data. Since I installed openSUSE from the current factory repos (11.2 Milestone 8, last online update 04.10.2009) the drive is no longer recognized by the system, when used as USB-Drive. It makes no difference, wether the drive is plugged in on boot or hotplugged, when the system is up. In /dev are no devices setup, so the drive cannot be mounted. Every thing works fine, when the drive is plugged in (on boot or hotplugged) as external eSATA-drive. It used to work (as eSATA and USB drive) on the same machine (Asus M70V Laptop) under openSUSE 11.1 and it works on the same machine (as eSATA and USB drive) using kubuntu 9.04 or MS Windows Vista. I can boot from the drive (there is kubuntu 9.04 in one of the partitions). It does not work (as USB drive) on my desktop machine (Medion M8800, no eSATA interface there) under openSUSE 11.2 either. But it works on my desktop (as USB drive) using kubuntu 9.04 or MS Windows XP. So i think this is not a hardware (cable, etc.) related problem but more likely a bug in the kernel or the ehci_hcd module. Probably this all is realated to Bugs 537613, 536457 but definitely not solved yet. Here some more details which might help to identify the problem area: Hardware ======== ASUS M70Vn Notebook (or Medion MD 8800 desktop) Operating system ================ openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 8 (x86_64) openSUSE Factory, last online update: 04.10.2009 4.3.1 (KDE 4.3.1) "release 3" Kernel ====== Linux 2.6.31-10-default #1 SMP 2009-09-29 11:18:23 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux dmesg-output ============ [ 5350.188063] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 [ 5350.337192] usb 2-1: New USB device found, idVendor=152d, idProduct=2329 [ 5350.337196] usb 2-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=5 [ 5350.337198] usb 2-1: Product: USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge [ 5350.337199] usb 2-1: Manufacturer: JMicron [ 5350.337201] usb 2-1: SerialNumber: 502FFFFFFFFF [ 5350.337311] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice [ 5350.338756] scsi6 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices [ 5350.338880] usb-storage: device found at 4 [ 5350.338881] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning [ 5351.336850] scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access ST932042 1ASG PQ: 0 ANSI: 2 CCS [ 5351.337298] sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 0 [ 5351.338947] usb-storage: device scan complete [ 5351.340481] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] 625142448 512-byte logical blocks: (320 GB/298 GiB) [ 5351.346581] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Write Protect is off [ 5351.346590] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Mode Sense: 34 00 00 00 [ 5351.346597] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 5351.350285] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 5351.350289] sdc: sdc1 sdc2 sdc3 sdc4 < sdc5 sdc6 sdc7 > [ 5351.441133] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Assuming drive cache: write through [ 5351.441143] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI disk [ 5351.624099] usb 2-1: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 [ 5351.745126] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5351.972095] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5352.188091] usb 2-1: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 [ 5352.313039] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5352.537126] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5352.753029] usb 2-1: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 [ 5353.164756] usb 2-1: device not accepting address 4, error -71 [ 5353.277118] usb 2-1: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4 [ 5353.693050] usb 2-1: device not accepting address 4, error -71 [ 5353.693092] usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 4 [ 5353.804093] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5 [ 5353.928449] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5354.160089] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5354.376100] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6 [ 5354.500193] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5354.728068] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5354.944073] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7 [ 5355.360374] usb 2-1: device not accepting address 7, error -71 [ 5355.472270] usb 2-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8 [ 5355.888847] usb 2-1: device not accepting address 8, error -71 [ 5355.888877] hub 2-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 [ 5356.157072] usb 6-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2 [ 5356.276052] usb 6-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5356.500087] usb 6-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5356.716074] usb 6-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 [ 5356.836076] usb 6-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5357.060050] usb 6-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71 [ 5357.276044] usb 6-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4 [ 5357.684069] usb 6-1: device not accepting address 4, error -71 [ 5357.796091] usb 6-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5 [ 5358.204062] usb 6-1: device not accepting address 5, error -71 [ 5358.204096] hub 6-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 1 lsusb ===== Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 003: ID 04f2:b033 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd <=== This is the device, not recognized Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 005 Device 002: ID 0b05:1751 ASUSTek Computer, Inc. Bug #387161 in libatasmart (Ubuntu): “JMicron drive 152d:2329 causes USB resets on ATA smart probing
Source: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libatasmart/+bug/387161
I tried some blacklisting in /lib/udev/rules.d/95-devkit-disks.rules .
# Check if a disk is ATA SMART capable #
# USB ATA enclosures with a SAT layer ATTRS{idVendor}=="152d", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2329", GOTO="check_sat_end" KERNEL=="sd*[!0-9]", ATTR{removable}=="0", ENV{ID_BUS}=="usb", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="disk", IMPORT{program}="devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart $tempnode"
LABEL="check_sat_end"
Maybe some expert should check, wether there are any actions necessary for openSUSE 11.2 RC1. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
