[Bug 691685] New: Using a webcache (such as squid) during installation doesn't work
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691685 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691685#c0 Summary: Using a webcache (such as squid) during installation doesn't work Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: per@opensuse.org QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-GB; rv:1.9.2.10) Gecko/20100914 Firefox/3.6.10 I have a transparent proxy running on our local network. I ran two 11.4 installations from the NET iso, one after the other. During the first one, I see the proxy being used and all data, packages etc being downloaded. As everything should now have been cached, I expected the second installation to be done a lot faster (downloads at local network speed). However, the second installation took almost just as long, and when I checked the squid log, it was quite clear that almost everything was downloaded again. 61 hits and 2500 cache misses. (I only did a minimum server install). Quite clearly, our distribution infrastructure (mirrorbrain, metalink etc) has essentially put the proxy server out of action. Note - I'm not interested in work-arounds. What I'm trying to achieve is to let squid maintain a local "on-demand" cache-copy/mirror, such that anyone can grab a CD or a USB-stick with the openSUSE NET iso and run an installation 1) at local network speed) and 2) without wasting external bandwidth. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. run a network install from the NET iso with transparent proxy or by setting proxy= on the command line. 2. run a second network install from the NET iso with transparent proxy or by setting proxy= on the command line. 3. look at the proxy access log and count number of cache hits. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

i think the best option would be for you to use specific mirror for the installation and switch back to download.o.o afterwards.
Yes, that'll work for the installation. However, when I change back to download.o.o, proxying still doesn't work. (i.e. the downloads are spread via the metalink "feature" and not cached). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
