[Bug 533979] New: X server gets signal 11 when switching applications
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=533979 Summary: X server gets signal 11 when switching applications Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: novell.com@christianmorlok.de QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=314983) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=314983) Xorg log with backtrace User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Konqueror/3.5; Linux) KHTML/3.5.9 (like Gecko) I updated factory yesterday, now the X server crashed 2 times today. I can't reproduce it, but it seems to happen if I switch to an application that was not used a while, so it has to reload its buffer. The version I have installed: zypper wp xorg-x11-server Loading repository data... Reading installed packages... S | Name | Type | Version | Arch | Repository --+-----------------+---------+----------+--------+------------------------------ i | xorg-x11-server | package | 7.4-50.3 | x86_64 | Main Repository (Factory OSS) v | xorg-x11-server | package | 7.4-50.3 | i586 | Main Repository (Factory OSS) Unfortunately, I don't have the debug-packages installed. I will install them and post a new Xorg.log the next time it crashes. Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open a lot of application 2. Switch from one app to another 3. crash Actual Results: X server crashes with signal 11 -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Thanks, Egbert. I don't believe the i586 version of xorg-x11-server is installed at all. See the difference in 'S' column ('v' for i586 against 'i' for x86_64).
Right.
I don't think that there is a gdb in Christian's $HOME, but /usr/bin/gdb should work instead as long as gdb has been installed. Setting to NEEDINFO.
This was a cut-n-paste from a script that I had sitting around. IHMO we used to ship such a script in the past. However I wasn't able to find it any more. Christian: Please replace the line: GDB=$HOME/gdb by GDB=/usr/bin/gdb -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It's still there and it's called xf86debug. Unfortunately it's only useful if the Xserver crashes immediately. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

OK, this should also do the job, it's missing the lines: handle SIGUSR2 nostop handle SIGPIPE nostop though. The latter one is rather important as we can easily get a SIGPIPE on X traffic. Christian, if you add those two lines you can also link this to /usr/bin/X. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Fixed this for openSUSE:Factory. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
