[Bug 469878] New: Q965 dual-head DVI with ADD2 2nd panel can't be found, works in 10.3
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=469878 User erikj@sgi.com added comment https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=469878#c4 Summary: Q965 dual-head DVI with ADD2 2nd panel can't be found, works in 10.3 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: erikj@sgi.com QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.8.1.19) Gecko/20081213 SUSE/2.0.0.19-0.1 Firefox/2.0.0.19 I just updated my opensuse11 root to opensuse11.1 + all online updates. I have a Dell Optiplex 745 with the integrated Intel graphics. I have a ADD2 card installed that makes a 2nd DVI-attached monitor available to the integrated graphics. This unit has the Q965 Intel chipset. The monitors are both Dell flat panels, DVI-connected, model 2007FP In opensuse 10.3, I have a nice dual-head setup that works fine. I was unable to use opensuse11.0 because it would hang whenever X11 started up. In opensuse11.1, X11 is able to start but my 2nd panel has nothing on it. So I'm back to trusty opensuse 10.3 for now. I have found that xrandr doesn't even see my 2nd monitor any more. There should be a TMDS-2 in here. So no wonder sax2 can't configure dual-head: Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1600 x 1200, maximum 3200 x 1200 VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) TMDS-1 connected 1600x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 367mmx 275mm 1600x1200 60.0*+ 60.0 1400x1050 74.8 60.0 1280x1024 75.0 60.0 60.0 1280x960 60.0 1152x864 75.0 75.0 1024x768 75.1 75.0 70.1 60.0 832x624 74.6 800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2 640x480 75.0 72.8 75.0 60.0 59.9 720x400 70.1 Here is the same xrandr output from opensuse10.3, which works: Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3200 x 1200, maximum 3200 x 1200 VGA disconnected (normal left inverted right) TMDS-1 connected 1600x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 367mm x 275mm 1600x1200 60.0*+ 59.9 1280x1024 75.0 59.9 1152x864 74.8 1024x768 75.1 60.0 800x600 75.0 60.3 640x480 75.0 60.0 720x400 70.1 TMDS-2 connected 1600x1200+1600+0 (normal left inverted right) 367mm x 275mm 1600x1200 60.0*+ 59.9 1280x1024 75.0 59.9 1152x864 74.8 1024x768 75.1 60.0 800x600 75.0 60.3 640x480 75.0 60.0 720x400 70.1 Here is lspci output: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Memory Controller Hub (rev 02) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 02) 00:1a.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 (rev 02) 00:1a.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 02) 00:1c.4 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 5 (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev f2) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801HB/HR (ICH8/R) LPC Interface Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) 4 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.5 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) 2 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 02) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5754 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02) Reproducible: Always -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I wanted to send you a clean one so I purged /etc/X11/xorg.conf... Went to init 3 Then I ran 'sax2 -r' and configured x11. I told sax2 that I had dual-head and wanted xinerama mode. After bringing X back up, it still only worked on my first panel. This makes sense since xrandr is only showing the one panel (as described earlier). TMDS-2 output is no longer detected by the current intel driver. I'm afraid this driver issue needs to be addressed by Intel's Linux driver development team. Thus I would like to ask you to report this issue upstream on bugs.freedesktop.org according to http://intellinuxgraphics.org/how_to_report_bug.html and add me to Cc (sndirsch@suse.de). You'll need to register for an account on bugs.freedesktop.org first, in case you don't have one yet. Thanks. I'm also able to use xrandr for screen positioning and it seems to work fine. I've been unable to craft a xorg.conf that works automatically. Using simply my opensuse10.3 one doesn't work and my attempts at crafting a more opensuse11.1 style xorg.conf have failed. I get lots of position style error messages in the xorg logs Cannot position output TMDS-1 relative to output Monitor[1] without modes Still, this specific bug seems resolved and I can use commands like this for now: xrandr --output TMDS-1 --left-of TMDS-2 and it works perfectly. That's good enough for me for now. I'd like to report a bug on the xorg.conf troubles I'm having. I think there is some sort of driver or related bug here. However, I feel it's risky. So my plan is to wait until there is a version of sax2 I can run that works in this scenario, then only report a bug if the resulting config file doesn't work for this machine. That way we know exactly what we're getting in terms of the xorg.conf in play. I'd be happy to try some stuff in this area if asked. xorg.conf files are complicated enough as it is without trying to debug my own hand-crafted errors :) Thanks -Erik -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
