[Bug 224616] New: yast source - long opening
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=224616 Summary: yast source - long opening Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: sfurdal@ehelp.pl QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Why "yast source" must openning so long? On every start up this program it downloading files that are already downloaded (see the attachment) ... This is so anyoing, specialy when there is more than 2-3 internet repositories, and ther's serveres are slow. 1) Yast2 source should read only local files ... - the refresh option is still in the program :> so why it downloading those files after it startup ?! 2) yast2 sw_single after starting up should ask: "Refresh repositories? : yes, no" ... this could alow user to make a smple choice, an advantege, that he could choose to have or not updated rpm's without opening second program ! 3) When its downloading files, the progress windows (not one window) just apears one after another, so user do not know when it will finaly stops downloading files and will show the main window. Maybe the solution is simple - merge two programs into one and when its downloading files should be seen "text box" with another information, for example: <file name> <progress bar> Downloading 3/12 files ... Speed (25kB/s)... Estimated time 00h 03m 32s - see the attachment! SIMPLICITY, CHOICE and verry important INFOMRMATION :) - those thing made "smart" program so popular... sorry for my english regards Sebastian Furdal -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=224616 ------- Comment #6 from sfurdal@ehelp.pl 2006-11-30 04:12 MST ------- I have forgotten - the same information should appear (under progress bar) when yast is dwonloading and installing rpm's ... for example (I had useted an echo to show how in my opinion could looks like - prity much the same like it is with "created with gimp"...) Package Speed: echo -ne "Downloading speed: $Dspeed" echo -ne "\rInstalling speed: $Ispeed" Package Elapsed time: echo -ne "Downloading time: $DEtime" echo -ne "\rInstalling time: $IEtime" the "\r" is verry important ;) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But my information is, that we cannot display things like - donwnload time and - connection speed Are these data available now? This year we will have more focus onto the YaST config modules. So I will close this bug via "invalid" and create a feature request. cu -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=224616 ------- Comment #10 from sfurdal@ehelp.pl 2007-01-08 07:54 MST ------- Why You cant add download time and connection speed? Those information are very important... specially when person have a slow internet connection or there is a problem with server... Users who are waiting for something without knowing when will came the end becoming more agressive, they just put themselves into there heads some ideas that openSUSE just sucks! IMHO You should also take focus into YaST package manager! People remember 10.1... and in 10.2 its not the best, but it could be... Another features 1) maybe You colud provide internet source lists in one file, with some sections - stable - unstalble - unknown - KDE World - Gnome Wolrd or something like that, that YaST could automaticly download this file, show it with options 'on' & 'off' of course tith information about source and speed (see #3), and user could just choose preferred sources. 2) aria2 - Parallelizing Multi-Protocol Utility for Downloading Files know how to make transfer more efficient. I am not an advance programmer but I think that is possible to merge or just use this program into/with YaST, and its under GPL. So, when user add the same sources but from other servers YaST should automaticly use all of them to 'make' the speed! 3) users also should know current speed of internet installation sources – the speed tester should be merged into the YaST with also option „testing Your onw internet connection”– it could be the first graphical program to have this wonderful option. If You want to make openSUSE the best distro You should think about easing people to have more programs and not only numbers are in this matter but the speed of how fast they can get it! Of course making more details informations are not the best things for all of the users, but You could provide 2 views - Simple + Advance. If You want some example screenshots, I can make some with gimp... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
