[Bug 464909] New: [yast2-gtk] Minor UI issues in the software management tool
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=464909 Summary: [yast2-gtk] Minor UI issues in the software management tool Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: rpmcruz@alunos.dcc.fc.up.pt ReportedBy: vuntz@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de CC: mmeeks@novell.com Found By: --- Launch the software management tool. Three minor issues with the buttons at the top (Available, Updates, Installed, All): + All doesn't have an icon while the other buttons have one + those buttons are too "tall", probably because of the size of the icon (a smaller icon should be used, to be consistent with all other buttons) + if you resize the window, the buttons expand to fill all the space. That's bad, they should probably stay the same size. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

1. the buttons use their respective status icon, not sure what would work for the "All" button. And we don't want to make it as salient as the others because it's not part of what we assumed to be the average workflow -- it's there because it may be useful at times, and some users might prefer it.
I see your point. I'm seeing the issue from the consistency point of view. Not sure who will win ;-) Maybe the issue then is that we shouldn't display buttons but a combo box (like some of the mockups below).
2. funny, haven't noticed that. I guess we have the SVGs, but not sure we want to ship icons just because of that. And these are not your ordinary buttons, as well, they behave and serve as tabs, so not sure it's really a bad thing they look a bit bigger than the user's ordinary button setup, especially considering their importance.
Actually, this convinces me that those shouldn't be buttons: buttons as tabs is not used anywhere else (or very rarely).
3. I guess that could look pretty awful if you maximize the window in a big screen. Maybe we should center them past a point?
Left-align! Center is generally bad :-)
By the way, shots of a couple of mockups if you would to comment on them. It's very easy to try new stuff and I'm surely open to new ideas (to enable them, grep PKG_SELECTOR_FACE): http://svn.opensuse.org/svn/yast/trunk/gtk/mockups/package-selector/kports-l... http://svn.opensuse.org/svn/yast/trunk/gtk/mockups/package-selector/10-like....
I kind of like kports-like.png. What is good there is that you have the combo box and the search box together, which is really useful. However, it's not really clear what has changed and what "apply" will do (is this the stuff in italic?). It's probably possible to have an item in the combo boxes to list those items, I guess. You're losing groups -- not sure if it's bad or not, but it's something to consider. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
