[Bug 1087470] New: Kernel panics and restarts after installing the newest kernel related updates
http://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1087470 Bug ID: 1087470 Summary: Kernel panics and restarts after installing the newest kernel related updates Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.3 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: kacper.pluta@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- After the last big kernel related updates I started to experience random restarts and kernel panics. I am not sure but I think it may be intel-microcode related (I have Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4400). I am going to downgrade it and observe if it will change something. Well, I have never debugged a kernel panic so I would like to ask you for a little help on how I can produce useful logs for you. Note, that I have experienced these problem only on my laptop. Which kernel did it work and which stopped working? Also, a screenshot (e.g. take a photo via your phone) showing the kernel stack trace would be helpful. Thanks.
I had the problem with 4.4.120-45-default and 4.15 (while testing it for a while). Kacper PS I will try to send you something more as soon as possible. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

And which kernel did still work?
I think everything still worked fine with 4.4.104, but I am not sure about 4.4.114. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Then please test 4.4.114. A narrower regression, easier to debug :)
I am on that :-) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

can you also deinstall the ucode-intel package and see if that helps?
OK. Give me some days and I will try to test everything. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Guys I think we have a problem here. So, as I said my laptop behaves strange. Once it restarted when I connected a pendrive but I thought this is not related to usb and it was just a coincidence.
Well, I just connected a usb wire to my desktop PC (HP Z230 workstation) and it suddenly restarted. Something is not right guys. Our super stable OS has a problem.
The desktop PC has 4.4.120-45-default. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Please check which kernel worked and which doesn't. I know that 4.4.120 is problematic on yours, but still not sure which kernel worked in the latest.
Also, please try the kernel in OBS Kernel:openSUSE-42.3 repo, too. This is the very latest kernel built from git tree, and it's a would-be-next-update kernel. The issue might have been already addressed.
Hey! So the last days I have been using 4.4.114-42 and everything have worked just fine. During next week, I will not have time to test anything so just in case I blocked kernel updates. In a week I will have a vacation so then I will play with different versions. Sorry for the time delay but I have quite a lot of work to do right now. Guys I am sorry for the confusion. I ran into other problems with the laptop and today I checked the RAM with Memtest+. The outcome of the test is that one of the RAM modules is broken. I think it is the reason of all the problems. I will test everything for a few days but I guess the problem is solved.
Sorry for the bug report. I should have checked the hardware in the first place.
Of course I have removed the faulty RAM ;-)(In reply to Kacper Pluta from comment #13)

I wonder why the problems happened more often with 4.4.120, but anyway I removed the faulty RAM module and I hope it is going to be OK now. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
