[Bug 867434] New: No way to set up a non - EFI bootloader
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=867434 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=867434#c0 Summary: No way to set up a non - EFI bootloader Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Bootloader AssignedTo: jsrain@suse.com ReportedBy: dieter.jurzitza@t-online.de QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:27.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/27.0 When setting up my installation on an Acer Travelmate P253 I Initially configure boot to "legacy" (non - UEFI) configuration. I boot from opensuse-DVD and configure the system as usual /dev/sda1 /boot 2GByte /dev/sda2 extended /dev/sda5 / 32GByte /dev/sda6 /usr 64GByte /dev/sda7 /home 400GByte /dev/sda8 swap a standard configuration I use since decades. After that, grub2 tells me that it wants to use grub2-efi for reasons I do not know and that there should be a partition /boot/efi of type vfat otherwise the system wouldn't boot. I choose "grub2" instead of "grub2-efi" as I do not want to use the efi system and I cannot anticipate a single reason for this. After installation the system does not boot. Well, then I installed openSUSE 11.4 (as readily several times before) what boots just fine with the above mentioned harddisk setup. No issues at all. After that I install openSUSE 13.1 again, use the very same harddisk setup and voila - though the installer told me again that it would not work, it does work like a charm. I do not understand why this structure is said to not work though it works like a charm with the older distribution and, after installing the older distribution (once) I can also boot openSUSE 13.1 though it tells me that things ought not work. I have observed this behaviour with three nearly identical notebooks "Acer Travelmate P253" now. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Try to install openSUSE 13.1 without grub2-efi 2. Complete installation, system does not boot 3. Reinstall, system does not boot (as often as you like) 4. Install any older distribution, system boots 5. Reinstall openSUSE 13.1, installer says it would not boot but it works Actual Results: The installer cannot be convinced to install grub to get a functional system. For whatever reason it insists in installing a grub2-efi infrastructure and it rejects standard functionality. Expected Results: A booting os 13.1 using a harddisk setup that I choose according to my requirements. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
