[Bug 208159] New: x.org lost 64 bit nv driver after security update
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=208159 Summary: x.org lost 64 bit nv driver after security update Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: roger.larsson@norran.net QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com At least is this my understanding of the problem. Updated a lot of packages yesterday - had forgot to run you for a while. When computer was restarted today it login screen did not show up. Tried Sax2 - did not work! Checked /var/log/Xorg.0.log Ahh... xfree could not load nv driver... Tried to find nv driver myself. No nv driver in X11R6/lib64 But it did exist in X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so Hmm... Recompiled X11 6.9 myself. Saved original X11R6 before install Sax2 worked again. Login did not. Now it could start but complained that I did not have xterm... renamed the new X11R6, renamed the old X11R6, copied newly created nv_drv to the old X11R6 version. Now I could login but I did not get into KDE... Checking what package is using the drivers reveals that there is no owner of the 64 bit version. (There are more files with this problem - like input/wacom) roger@icd:~> rpm -q -f /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so xorg-x11-driver-video-6.9.0-46.15 roger@icd:~> rpm -q -f /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so file /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so is not owned by any package -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Log in on console to start X from there to get a better understanding of what is happening with KDE startup. There is something strange going on...
startx kde
does not work, but
startx startkde
does. Even stranger is that /usr/X11R6/bin/kde is a link to /opt/kde3/bin/startkde -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=208159 ------- Comment #2 from roger.larsson@norran.net 2006-10-03 17:46 MST ------- Update. FINALLY found a way to make KDE start properly. If the ~/.xinitrc.template file is copied to ~/.xinitrc it works. Without it only problems... Why? Should not the global be good enough? I wonder what happened... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=208159 ------- Comment #6 from andreas.hanke@gmx-topmail.de 2006-10-09 17:20 MST ------- Roger, how did you do the update? The following information shows clearly that your system is broken: (In reply to comment #0)
roger@icd:~> rpm -q -f /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so xorg-x11-driver-video-6.9.0-46.15 roger@icd:~> rpm -q -f /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so file /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so is not owned by any package
The x86_64 xorg-x11-driver-video package does not even contain /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nv_drv.so! So, if this file is owned by a package named xorg-x11-driver-video on your system, then this package is clearly not an x86_64 package. It can only be the i586 package, which is wrong. If you did the update with either YaST or Zenworks, then it's a libzypp bug, not an X.org bug. In that case, please file a new bug against libzypp *and attach the logfiles there*. If you used another tool for updating (smart, apt), just forget it, they are not supported and get the x86_64/i586 thing wrong very often. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
