[Bug 257345] New: Digital camera (mass storage device) is detected twice by KDE (camera:/ ioslave)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257345 Summary: Digital camera (mass storage device) is detected twice by KDE (camera:/ ioslave) Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 2 Platform: 64bit OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: one_way@online.de QAContact: qa@suse.de My digital camera, which behaves as a normal USB mass storage device, appears twice on the KDE desktop: On the one handy as the mass storage device - mount/unmount/access works as expected. On the other hand as device to be handled by the "camera" ioslave. Trying to mount the camera this way obviously fails. kdebase 3.5.8-18 kdelibs 3.5.6-19 libgphoto2 2.3.1.3-trunk 14 (not needed, but required because of some dependency) kdegraphics3-kamera is NOT installed, however!! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

What is the bug you see? That camera: does not work unless you install kdegraphics3-kamera ? that's a WONTFIX for me - as we do install it and I don't want to make it a dependency. A suggest might be in order though. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257345 ------- Comment #2 from one_way@online.de 2007-03-26 08:44 MST ------- Well, until a few days ago I didn't have this behaviour, so I don't see why this annoying behaviour should be really necessary ;). Suggestion/questions: The camera isn't registering itself as two devices - why should it? - it is falsely recognized as two devices by the OS. This is IMHO to be considered as an error. Why is the "camera:/" ioslave available at all, if the kdegraphics-kamera RPM needed to handle it isn't even installed? (gphoto is, however, installed, as digiKam relies on it). This would be different from all other additional ioslaves. And, even if kdegraphics-kamera would be installed, why does the "camera:/" ioslave "feel responsible" for a modern digital camera which registers as a mass storage device? AFAIK gphoto explicitely doesn't handle this kind of digicams, so adding another dependency doesn't solve the problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=257345 ------- Comment #3 from one_way@online.de 2007-03-26 11:36 MST ------- To add some additional info: It seems that KDE wants to mount the camera with system:/media/sdb1 (as mass storage device) and as system:/media/camera (this one won't work, however). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It seems like the digital camera (an Olympus model, if this is relevant) registers itself as both an PTP imaging device (or whatever it is called) _and_ an USB mass storage device - at the same time. The latter is handled "normally", the former would seemingly be handled by system:/media/camera. So it looks like KDE was basically right in detecting two devices. The remaining question is whether KDE should offer the user both possibilities of accessing the device, especially when the infrastructure for one of the two ways isn't even available. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I detected this behavior width PANASONIC DMC-FZ7 and width some USB2.0 flash disc (A-data). I remember, that it did also CANON A510 some months ago, but in this time no - probably some update corrected it for some devices.
