First, KDE uses gstreamer-0.10, so it doesn't matter which 1.x plugins you have installed.
yes i know this
Second, openSUSE's gstreamer packages lack support for most restricted codecs (mpg and flv f.e., but MP3 _is_ included, so that's why you can hear sound but don't see a video), you need to install the packages from Packman for that.
yes i know this
So please switch _all_ gstreamer packages to the Packman versions, and also install this additional gstreamer-0_10-plugins-ugly-orig-addon (for mpg and flv you would need gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good and gstreamer-0_10-plugins-bad respectively, but I think those are installed by default).
this is already the case -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

i have no pb to read mp4 or flv with kaffeine . Kaffeine uses xine for playing back multimedia files, not phonon.
Try dragonplayer, that one does use phonon. Does it work there? That would rule out phonon/gstreamer as the source of the problem.
then i think there is a pb with dolphin and the player dolphin uses in the data panel
I just tried and I have the same problem here. But not only in dolphin, also in the file picker's preview (but I can play videos fine in dragonplayer). And the codec doesn't really matter apparently. It's the same with a Ogg/Theora video as well. I will investigate this, but I would think it's an upstream bug in KDE. I do think at the moment that this widget comes from nepomuk, which is built without ffmpeg support in openSUSE. Maybe that's the problem? I will try to build it with ffmpeg support and report back. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Googling for video/x-surface leads to gstreamer-vaapi so try to install gstreamer-0_10-plugins-vaapi, or maybe uninstall it if you have it installed (I don't have it).
i remove gstreamer-0_10-plugins-vaapi then now no more pb . it remains the "duration" pb . are you sure there is no other way for nepomuk to know the duration ? because with my old mandriva 2010 kde 4.8.4 there is the nepomuk tag "duration" and mandriva also does not install packet for legal reason . i will try to investigate tomorrow but i don't have tech knowledge about this . thanks -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yes I am sure. In KDE 4.8 strigi was still used for that, which included at least an avi data extractor without the need for ffmpeg or anything similar. But since 4.10 nepomuk has its own indexers (written from scratch), and for video files there's only the ffmpeg-based one. But that's the other bug report. This one could be closed then I suppose. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
