[Bug 367926] New: Checkbox of the group 'Users' is not ticked upon user creation time, but stil teh user is assoicated with it
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=367926 Summary: Checkbox of the group 'Users' is not ticked upon user creation time, but stil teh user is assoicated with it Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hvdheuvel@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Environment: all versions of : - SLES (i386 and x86_64) - SLED (i386 and x86_64) - openSuSE (i386 and x86_64) Symptom: All users that are created through Yast2 (GUI) are added to the group users by default, even though this group is not configured in the default skeleton files, nor does the group show as being added with a checkbox next to the group Expected result: If the GUI is being used to add a user, and the default group of that user is called 'Users' you would expect to see the check box for that group also being ticked as additional sanity check, similar as the other two default groups the new user is associated with (dialout & video). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Created an attachment (id=203910) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=203910) [details] ncurses reproduction
Hi Hans! Are you sure this is specific to the graphical interface? Here, in a 10.3 system, as appended, I can reproduce it in ncurses; default group is set to "users", even though the respective entry in the List isn't ticked.
Hi Ricardo, Yes, you are right. it indeed happens when using both Ncurses and the GUI. Don't know where I looked at when initially reporting this and not noticed this, apologies for the confusion. It appears that when you are creating a new user, the default GROUP ID is not taken into account when for that new user the group memberships are evaluated ? (I have not verified my assumption however, by setting a new 'default' group and see if checkboxes are then ticked) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Using the Yast2 GUI, every user you create, by default is being associated with the groups 'video and dialout' AND the group 'users' as shown in the bottom left corner. Yet the checkbox of this group 'users' is not ticked by default if you look at the Yast2 Gui (See screenshot)
Using Yast (ncurses) the group 'users' by default is added and properly shows up in the list.
That's correct behavior, because those are different issues. The list shows the secondary groups (technically, user name is in the secondary group line in /etc/group file), but the "users" group is the default group of the user, and this is an attribute of the user, not of the selected group (technically, primary group's GID is written in the user's line of /etc/passwd) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Jiri, just to clear it out, why is the primary group listed in the secondary groups box then? Can a user belong to both classes, and is it really useful?
Hm, good question. Technically, you can have a user's default group 'users' and still let it be member of that (in /etc/passwd), so it makes sense at least from this point If it really is good for anything... I don't know. Michael? Another reason (well, minor) is that when you change the default group, you can check the membership of the former default in the secondary group box without a need of redrawing that box. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can we than modify existing description(s) to better reflect as to what is considered Primary and what are considered Secondary Groups ?
I agree, it would make sense. I think it already was there, but was changed later for some reason. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
