[Bug 727821] New: KDE Login Screen Should Display Clickable User Icons
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727821 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=727821#c0 Summary: KDE Login Screen Should Display Clickable User Icons Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.1 Version: RC 1 Platform: PC OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE4 Workspace AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: malv_star@hotmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:7.0.1) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/7.0.1 In openSuSE 12.1, icons representing each desktop user were visible and clickable on the KDE login screen. This is no longer the case in the 12.1 release candidate - clickable names are gone, and the user must type their username in manually. This is inconvenient and confusing for "average" users, so the clickable list should be re-added to the login screen. Reproducible: Always Changing this would involve modifying the xml file present in the package kdm-opensuse-branding. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could that have something to do with the different aspect ratio? What else could cause the problem? Maybe its a kdm bug?
So on your virtual screen, it works no matter what *aspect ratio* you set on your virtual machine? I mean, 600x480 has an aspect ratio of 1.25, whereas your Acer has a ratio of ~1.71. Does it work for 1920x1080? That's a ratio of 1.77... I also updated to final accordingly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What I saw on the VirtualBox installation was, that the user lsit was complete, as expected (containing root, user1 and user2). If i choose smaler resolutions, the userlist starts to overlay on the login area in the middle of the screen. Not nice, but everything was at least on the screen. On my Acer, I always only see the user1 in the list (the one which was created during installation). And I'm not able to get the other once onto the screen. It looks exactly as if only unser1 is in the list, no garbage or half of other user icon is visible. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After doing that, I added a second user and then used the openSUSE-mod.xml file for the kdm theme. The result is, I'm wondering why, it works. All users are there, clickable as expected. Could that have to do with some kde4 graphical effects? I have disabled them in the previous installation. Anyhow, the clickable user icons where still overlayed with the loginbox in middle of the screen. Thus, I did a small modification which works fine on my acer, but i have not tested on other machine yet. I found a solution which should work fine with all resolutions that are not less than 800x600. The idea was, to just place the user list left of the middle login box. I saved the loginbox has a width of 200x600 pixles, thus a lot of users can be managed in the list. Also 200 pixle width looks quite fine to me. Any progress on this? The missing user icons and the need to manually manipulate the KDM theme file after every update is extremely annoying.
Any progress? Well, this bug is still WONTFIX for 12.1, there is a workaround (comment #30) which does *not* forgo the ability to switch window managers (see comment #32). For anything else, you'll have to wait for openSUSE 12.2 (foreseen for 2012-07-12, see http://en.opensuse.org/Roadmap ). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Neither do I, but I use Marcus Aurelius's prayer: "O Gods, please grant me the strength to change what must be changed, the patience to endure what I cannot change, and the wisdom to tell the two apart." In this case I think that changing this WONTFIX decision is beyond my powers (or yours) so I do what I can to work around it and otherwise don't express what I believe would be useless complaints. When you have a bug, that is clearly a huge backward step in terms of usability, with a fix supplied and tested by the community, that only affects a single file, with no chance of breaking anything else, and once it is complete you have the audacity to mark it as "WONTFIX", that's the sign of a distro that's both out of touch with the needs of its users, and on the way down the drain. And Marcus Meisner will not be happy with that. Second hacking and theming kdm is really a pain is ass. but it's easy to contribute just checkout the new git branding repository on github (you need 12.2 branch), work, work, and fix all what you expect to be there. Once you will have spend hours, and better understand how kdm theming works, and how much limitations you have to respect, and have that kdm working on several resolution (from 800x600 until infinite), also with domain login, remote login etc, you will find that this new one, is not that bad. Three : perfection does not exist in our world. Once again, I personally will not spend more time on details for 12.2 release. It's too late in the cycle. But nobody can stop you to dig in it and push fixes. It's not mentioned anywhere in the bug report at all! My complaint was solely about how the theme looked only showing that single user on the left. But since that is a bug and not intentional, it seems my complaint is not necessary. Instead, should I submit a bug report against the new theme? Just to be clear, I did set the system to require login even though I only created a single user. I always do this for laptops, but not for home computers.
